Continue ReadingFriday marked the turn of a new month, and also brought us into the home stretch of the 2018-19 regular season. With several conferences and leagues still up for grabs, many teams still have work to do going into the final days of the season. Upsets occurred and revenge was had on Friday night as many teams played after a snowy morning cancelled several schools. Here is a look at the top storylines from February 1st.
Centerville tops Springfield
Going into Friday’s game, the Wildcats were undefeated in GWOC play, while Centerville was riding a 7-game winning streak. After a back-and-forth first 3 quarters, Centerville outscored Springfield by 13 in the 4th quarter and went on to beat the Wildcats 60-44. The loss opens up the GWOC East race up even more as now Wayne and Centerville are 1 game behind Springfield. The loss may even be enough to drop the Wildcats from the #1 spot in the Power Rankings that will be released later this weekend.
Monroe drops 30 in a losing effort
Fairborn senior Shaunn Monroe (2019) has seen his stock rise ever since last summer and as a result, had his first college offer from Thomas More. One reason for his success has been Monroe’s ability to score in high quantities. Friday night was no different as he scored a game high 30 points against Stebbins. Monroe found ways to beat defenders off the dribble, and even torched the Indians from college range 3-point line. Even with his scoring up, Fairborn still dropped the game losing by 8 on the road. Fairborn will have little time to be upset as they turn around and face Trotwood-Madison on Saturday.
Brookville gets their revenge against Monroe
Brookville was undefeated, and one of the top ranked Division III teams going into their game last month at Monroe. The Hornets had something to say about that and ultimately upset the Blue Devils 63-56. Brookville hosted the rematch on their senior night on Friday night and made sure they took care of business the second time around. Outscoring the Hornets 16-0 in the 1st quarter, Brookville never let off the gas and won 49-29. The win continues to help hold Brookville’s spot at the top of the SWBL Southwestern division and also gets the Blue Devils prepared for upcoming matchups with Bellbrook, Franklin, and Twin Valley South down the home stretch.
Anna loses their first game of the season
The Rockets finally fell for the first time this season as they lost 51-47 on their home floor to a very talented Jackson Center team. The loss however is not an issue at the moment. In the Division III power rankings, Anna still has a better record than 2 loss teams Brookville and Madison, and with Jackson Center being one of the hottest teams in 2019 in Division IV, this is far from a bad loss for the Rockets. Jackson Center has lost only once in 2019 and will use this win as momentum as they prepare for upcoming matchups with Marion Local and Minster.
