Consider DeKalb County an unproven team, but a team on the rise.
Junior Varsity Coach’s Insight
Much of the reason for optimism, including the smattering of late season victories, rests with the emerging young players. DeKalb County Assistant Basketball Coach Logan Vance also coaches the JV. He shared a few minutes on a phone call this week.
“We have two or three freshmen that are going to be pretty good we suspect,” shared DeKalb County Junior Varsity Coach Logan Vance. “One of them is Lucas Hale. He is a little point guard, drives the ball. If he grows a little bit, then he will be really good.”
Hale is currently “5’9″ or 5’10”.
“I would say he was probably is the best (JV player) because of his scoring ability,” said Coach Vance. “The two (levels he) scores he most are three’s and really good pull-up jump shooter.”
Outgoing senior starter Hayden Thomas essentially shared the exact same names as Coach Vance.
“Yes, Lucas Hale will be a very, very good player for us in the future years and Brayden Antoniak,” expressed Hayden Thomas through Twitter DM. “But most definitely Lucas Hale. He did not get much playing time this year considering that we had 7 seniors and 4 of the seniors were starters at some point.”
Brayden Antoniak grew up playing with Lucas in DeKalb County. He has some budding respect in the county.
“That was going to be the other one,” agreed DeKalb County JV Coach Vance. “He is a workhorse. He does everything you ask him to do. He has a good mid-range jump shot. Really athletic.”
The growth of these two freshmen is certainly limited or exacerbated by their physical growth in the coming months.
“Brayden is about 5’11” or 6’0″,” said Coach Vance. “He will probably grow a lot. He wears a size 14 shoe. He works really hard.”
Coach Vance and junior varsity guided his Tigers against Siegel.
“They are a lot more athletic,” admitted Coach Vance. “Brayden outrebounded over some kids are that bigger than him. They are a lot more athletic. He is a really good rebounder.”
Many factors merge or don’t merge to make good young players and teams into matured, postseason strong varsity players and teams. DeKalb County will begin anew in the fall with the DeKalb County Next Wave.
