MVP – Miles Slater (Deer Creek)
Miles Slater finished with 11 points, but was the most important for hitting an equalizing shot with a minute to go in the game while drawing the foul. He hit the go-ahead free throw and Deer Creek never looked back.
Best finisher at the rim — Turner Suchy (Deer Creek)
Tanner Suchy always manages to impress when he has the ball in transition. He a sort of sixth sense for finishing shots high at the rim. His craftiness was unmatched Friday night and was especially important in a person 7-point scoring run in the second quarter to put the Antlers ahead.Every bucket mattered in the close match, and some of Suchy’s shots were the most difficult anybody hit.
Best shooter off the dribble — Miles Slater (Deer Creek)
Aside from hitting the equalizer and go-ahead free throw, Miles Slater was also significant for the Antlers in finishing shots out of the dribble.
Best rebounder — Desmon Elliot (Yukon)
Yukon senior Desmon Elliot 18 rebounds Friday night, and it’s of little surprise to most. The 6-foot-8 senior post has elite strength and a reach to makes the board game his masterpiece.
Most explosive — Baron Hopgood (Deer Creek)
Baron Hopgood has been integral part of what Deer Creek has been able to do this year. His athleticism, speed, vertical, and ability to explode makes him so pivotal for the Antlers, especially in tonight’s 14-point performance.
Most aggressive forward — Jalyn Todd (Deer Creek)
Jalyn Todd was perhaps the most important player in 32 minutes for the Antlers on both ends of the floor. Deer Creek Head Coach Mike Donnelly made a point to mention after the win how pivotal Todd’s defensive, rebounding, and versatile play was. He battled for rebounds in the paint, didn’t allow easy scoring, and worked inside out to stretch defenders.
Best ball-handler — Zach Tretheway (Deer Creek)
Zach Tretheway is the foremost leader in Deer Creek’s dominant back-court and leads the floor for the Antlers. Tretheway finished with 13 points with his great off-the-dribble play. Furthermore, he played keep-away to help scoring opportunities to develop down the stretch.
Best passer — Carson Lambakis (Yukon)
Lambakis is a talented floor general who can score the ball also. Lambakis brings the ball up for Yukon and is the center-piece for ball movement in the Millers’ mostly stationary offense. Despite his keen passing, Lambakis came up the biggest when he scored five points in a row to put the Millers up by two going into the final minute of the game.
Most surprising player — Carson Price (Yukon)
Carson Price has been a pleasant surprise in both of the games I have been able to watch Yukon this season. He shoots the ball well from range and hustles up and down the floor all night.
Most awkward moment — First two minutes of the game
The strangest point in the game came after the first possession. After Deer Creek won the tip, it went down the floor, failed to score, and forced the ball out of bounds. The game came to a standstill, however, when the officiating crew realized the clock had failed to start for the first twenty-or-so-seconds go the night. They promptly sent both teams back to their respective benches to convene before electing to run 5 second of the clock — in the spirit of fairness.
