With just a few games left in the regular season, let’s take a look at the 6th- through 10th-leading shot blockers in Colorado’s Class 5A.
6. Blake Whitelaw, 6-7, F/C, George Washington, 2019, 2.4 bpg
Whitelaw has a 6-foot-10 wingspan and makes excellent use of it on a nightly basis. Quick off his feet and surprising good with the ball in his hands, Whitelaw has worked hard to add an improved jump shot to his defensively-oriented skill set.
7. Kevin Sax, 6-7, C, ThunderRidge, 2019, 2.3 bpg
Sax stands at a solid 6-foot-7 and easily matches, or exceeds, that mark in wingspan. He has developed a reliable back-to-the-basket game with a few moves he knows he can rely on. One thing that has never been in doubt is the senior’s feel for moving without the ball and ability to anticipate opposing shots.
8. Darien Myers, 6-3, SF, Palmer, 2019, 2.2 bpg
Meyers has proven that he can do a number of things at a high level on the basketball court. He made this particular list for his shot-blocking prowess, but he’s also averaging a double-double with 18.3 points and 11.1 rebounds and even dishes out over three assists a game.
9. Damian Forrest, 6-8, C/PF, Poudre, 2019, 2.2 bpg
Forrest has been having an outstanding senior season and doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon. With the postseason arriving soon, that’s good news for Poudre and bad news for whichever team has to face him in the first round. Averaging a double-double to go with his 2.2 blocks and 1.2 steals per night, Forrest just doesn’t take plays off.
10. Isaac Ondekane, 6-8, C, Mullen, 2020, 1.9 bpg
Ondekane is a big young man with a big motor who never stops hustling to help his team win. The Mustangs junior has great size and strength but it doesn’t slow him down. He’s improving with his back to the basket on offense but already has no problem playing above the rim at both ends, a regular in-game dunker and shot-blocker.
