With just a few games left in the regular season, let’s take a look at the leading shot blockers in Colorado’s Class 5A.
1. Trevor Baskin, 6-6, F, Pomona, 2020, 4.5 bpg
Yep, you read that right. Baskin is rejecting an incredible 4.5 opposing shots per game this season. What’s more impressive is his all-around game, averaging 15.8 points, 5.4 assists, 10.7 rebounds and 3.0 steals a night. Baskin is averaging a double-double this winter and against Aurora Central on Dec. 11, he blocked 10 shots, which earned him one of three triple-doubles the junior now has in 2018-19.
2. Lucas Moerman, 6-10, C/F, Doherty, 2020, 3.4 bpg
If he’s blocking over three shots a game, just think of how many shots Moerman is altering or how many his 6-foot-10 presence prevents from being attempted all together. He’s also averaging a double-double with 12.5 points and 12.0 rebounds a night through 21 games. The 12th-ranked 2020 player in Prep Hoops Colorado’s rankings sure has looked the part this winter.
3. Michael Poux, 6-8, F/C, Castle View, 2019, 3.2 bpg
Blocking 3.2 shots per night, Poux certainly has carved out a valuable niche for himself in the Sabercats’ lineup. Not only does he like blocking shots, and the reaction it elicits from the home crowd, Poux also has a talent for collecting the ball after he blocks a shot and igniting the fast break with his outlet passing.
4. Rashon Barron, 6-6, PF/C, Fountain-Fort Carson, 2019, 2.6 bpg
With his combination of leaping ability and a 6-foot-6, 220-pound frame, Barron is an intimidating presence. That could mean when he’s winding up for a dunk or lining up an opposing guard’s layup. Keyshawn Maltbia leads the Trojans in scoring Barron gives them a two-way force that few of their opponents can match.
5. Quincey Jewett, 6-5, P, Rangeview, 2019, 2.6 bpg
Jewett has a special combination of height and spring, as well and length and timing. He runs like a guard, always stays involved in everything the No. 6-ranked Raiders are doing and can finish with flair above the rim. Through 21 games, he’s averaging 16.5 points, 12.1 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 2.6 blocks per game.
