Continue ReadingIt was the fifth annual Coaches for a Cure hosted by Team Loaded at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond, VA, and like every year this event has gone on it was full of high level talent and next level prospects. There were five games on the day, and numerous standouts. I will be breaking down some of the top players from the events, while fellow contributor Houston Wilson will have his Takeaways from the event as well. Here’s a look at the scores from the games and some of the underclassmen standouts from Saturday afternoon/evening.
Highland Springs 57 St. Christopher’s 53
Life Christian Academy 72 Maury 67
Blue Ridge 70 Steward School 42
Hopewell 57 Trinity Episcopal 54
LC Bird 57 John Marshall 55
Marcellus Avery | 6’6” F | Life Christian 2020
Even without shooting the basketball particularly well, Avery still was the most productive guy in LCA’s close win over Maury. The versatile 6’6” forward showed his ability to play inside-out, his good athleticism as a rim protector and finisher and his ability to guard multiple positions while being a mismatch on the offensive end. He finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds in the win.
Dominique Finney | 6’5” F | Life Christian 2020
Finney continues to be impressive this season as a three and d guy with great athleticism. He showed the ability to run the floor and finish, shoot the midrange and the deep ball off the catch and rebound well on both ends of the floor. He finished with 12 points and five rebounds on 5-for-9 shooting from the field.
William Lee | 5’10” G | Blue Ridge 2020
Lee continues to find his way for Blue Ridge after transferring from NYC this summer, and the combo guard has really made his strides on the defensive end. He sits down and guards ball handlers, he stays in help and he’s active. Offensively he can play on and off the basketball, he shoots the deep ball and he has good feel when attacking the defense as well. He finished with 8 points and 2 assists in limited time in a blowout win over Steward School.
Henry Coleman | 6’8” PF | Trinity Episcopal 2020
The most impressive part about Coleman is that he has become the focal point of every defense that he faces and he still continues to put up big numbers night in and night out. What kind of numbers has he been putting up? Coleman’s 21 points and 12 rebounds in their close loss to Hopewell was what you would consider an average game for him. He finished around the rim and above the rim well, he rebounded on both ends and he brought it on the defensive end in their press coming away with four steals.
Tyler Henderson | 5’8” PG | LC Bird 2020
Looking at the stat sheet you may not think that Henderson had that great of a game, but his impact goes well beyond the stat sheet. The lead guard finished with 8 assists to three turnovers, and throughout the game he set the tone on both ends and controlled the tempo on the offensive end. He’s a one man press break, he can turn the corner on almost anyone and get in the lane and he has great feel and vision. He only shot the ball five times but he had a big bucket late in the game when they needed him to get one and on both ends he played with great leadership and energy as well.
Houston Emory | 6’10” PF | Blue Ridge 2021
Hailing from Devon, PA, Emory is going to be a big man to watch moving forward at Blue Ridge, as he’d likely start anywhere else in the state. He brought energy off the bench, using his size in the paint to alter shots, rim run and finish around the basket. He’s long and mobile with good hands and feet, good touch around the rim and a strong frame to build on moving forward. He still needs some polishing but he’s going to be a good one with time.
Efton Reid | 6’11” PF | Steward School 2021
Reid didn’t play his best game of the year as he was matched up with a big Blue Ridge squad that through waves at him, but you see that super high ceiling and level of potential he has. He can seal and finish with both hands, he can step out on the perimeter where he can shoot and pass and he’s becoming more athletic and more mobile every time you see him. He finished with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in their loss to Blue Ridge.
Elvin Edmonds | 6’2” PG | Hopewell 2021
Edmonds was arguably the MVP of the day, as he lit into Trinity Episcopal from the beginning and set the tone for Hopewell to pull out a three point victory. The sophomore guard came out on fire, going 8-for-11 in the first half from the field and scoring 21 of Hopewell’s 32 points in the first half. While Trinity made a concerted effort to slow him down in the second half, that left the rest of the Blue Devils open to make shots and they stepped up and got it done. Edmonds finished with 27 points, the high for anyone in the event, and was 5-for-8 from behind the arc.
