Class of 2019: Gridiron Hoopers
Last Wednesday, senior gridiron standouts across the state made their decisions final on where they would be playing their college football. Among the many who signed were a few two-sport stars who have been big contributors on the basketball floor this winter as well. Here’s a quick look at some of those players across the state.
Patrick Herbert, Sheldon (ranked #31 in Class of 2019)
Herbert actually signed with Oregon back in the early signing period and as a tight end, will be getting a chance to catch passes from his older brother Justin for the Ducks. This season on the basketball floor, he’s become the top option in the paint while Dominic McGarvey has been out due to injury. A natural athlete, Herbert has been able to score and rebound for the Irish as they fight for a post-season berth.
Levi Nielsen, Silverton (ranked #42)
Nielsen signed with Western Oregon to play quarterback. The 6-foot-4 forward was also getting some small school attention for basketball, where he’s been a double-double machine for the Silver Foxes this year. His play up front will be critical in Silverton’s run at the 5A state title.
Blake Gobel, Banks (ranked #44)
Gobel signed with Eastern Washington as a tight end. In hoops, he’s been a stalwart in the post for the Braves and at 6-foot-7 and athletic, he’s been hard to handle by opponents. Along with conference rival Seaside, Banks is considered one of the favorites in the 4A title chase and Gobel is a big reason why.
Cory Stover, Marshfield (ranked #83)
Stover signed with Oregon State back in December as a defensive end. His strength and athleticism have been huge for Marshfield this year as he’s been a force in the post. The Pirates are also a threat in the 4A state title race and Marshfield is hoping for big production out of Stover to get them there.
Isaac Flemmer, Valley Catholic (unranked)
Flemmer signed with Eastern Washington as an offensive lineman. At 6-foot-7, 265-pounds he’s a big guy down low and while his basketball skills are still developing, his raw mammoth size alone has made him a matchup nightmare inside. Valley Catholic is in the state tournament chase and Flemmer has his role with the Valiants.
Aidan Maloney, Liberty (unranked)
Maloney committed to play football at Yale. He’s been an all-around player for Liberty this year, contributing with his athleticism and ability to make plays on both sides of the ball.
