ICYMI: Part 1
Kolton Mitchell (Victory Rock)
The progression from junior to senior year for Kolton Mitchell has been quite evident. The 6’3″ Victory Rock guard is playing more confidently and with purpose. Mitchell has always had quick legs and good passing, but he’s taken over the leadership on a new-look squad and it is paying dividends. With a plethora of Division I interest (Kennesaw State, FGCU, UCF, Coastal Carolina and Houston among them), the 2019 guard is going to land somewhere. Mitchell is only hitting the peak of his abilities as he is very coachable and a true hard worker.
Diego Rivera (Miami Christian)
With Neftali Alvarez now flourishing at Division I Fairfield, 2019 guard Diego Rivera has made the transition for Miami Christian a nice one at the point guard spot. The 6’3″ point man is a gifted outside shooter and a player that can create for himself. He’s reached double digits in all but two games this season for the tremendously tough Class 2A powerhouse. Rivera dropped a whopping 76 points (30 of 44 from the field, 14 of 24 from 3) in a win over Brito on Jan. 15. He topped the 1,000-point mark at Miami Christian this week and has earned interest from UMass and Towson as of late.
Joshua Williams (Choctaw)
When you think of determination and flash, it is hard not to picture Joshua Williams. The 2019 5’11” Choctaw guard always turns heads in whichever gym he plays basketball in. At the 2nd annual Sun Bash in Tampa in January, he wowed the crowd against IMG National and certainly made a name for himself to those who hadn’t seen him play before. He scored 20 points in that game and has had two 30 point outings as well this season. A consistent contributor since his sophomore season, Williams is too good to go unnoticed. Whether he lands at a Junior College, NAIA or Divison II/Division IIIschool, he deserves a long look.
Christian Deleon (Hillsborough)
The elusiveness and absolute speed from Christian Deleon game in and game out is fun to watch. The 2019 5’10” Hillsborough guard is locked in this season for the Terriers and has been focused on one goal, a Class 8A state title. After losing to Choctaw in the state semifinal in Lakeland a year ago, Deleon is simply doing the right things on the court with crisp passing and all-out attacking. Deleon may be smaller framed, but he holds his own and isn’t afraid to put his body on the line along the way.
Richard Charles (North Miami)
A strong and athletic combo guard by the name of Richard Charles is someone who deserves more credit. The 2019 6’3″ North Miami guard plays as a clear cut leader and dangerous shooter for his side. The Pioneers go out with a no fear mentality and Charles is well bought into that. With FIU, Barry and Lynn interest, the senior guard is going to find a home there is no doubt. His outside touch and overall ability to attack and allude defenders is a clear asset.
