CBC took control of the game from the outset with its smothering defense and cruised to a 52-39 victory to clinch the outright championship in the MCC for the first time since 2005. The Cadets can close the regular season conference slate undefeated with a victory over Vianney over Friday.
Here are the top five standouts from CBC-DeSmet on Wednesday night.
Caleb Love 6’3″ CBC (’20): The talented guard scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Cadets to the victory. He got loose in the third quarter when he scored 10 points as CBC broke open the game and took a 20-point lead. His mid-range jumper from the elbow is cash money, but he also hit back-to-back 3-pointers to break things open.
Mike West 6’4″ CBC (20): A standout football player on the Cadets’ powerful state championship football team, West had a huge impact on Wednesday night’s victory with his rebounding, high motor and physical presence in the paint. He had four points, a team-high eight rebounds and really set the tone with his hustle and chasing down loose balls. He also had a highlight-reel one-handed follow dunk at the end of the third quarter.
Evan Asleson 6’2″ DeSmet (’19): The talented shooting guard scored a game-high 19 points and did his best to try to keep the Spartans competitive after the team’s slow start. He displayed his 3-point range by knocking down some jumpers from long distance from both wings. He is a tough competitor who took the challenge of handling the ball against pressure defense and also attacked the basket.
Josh Wallace 6’6″ CBC (’19): The ultra-competitive power forward scored 10 points, but he had a great presence in the lane with five blocked shots as he closed down the interior and help the Cadets stymie DeSmet with its defense for much of the game. His work rate and effort is rarely matched on the floor.
Yaya Keita 6’9″ DeSmet (’21): The athletic young power forward has been a force on the defensive boards throughout the season and last night was no different as he grabbed 13 rebounds. He displayed his athleticism and quickness as he also had three steals and a couple of blocked shots.
Ari Jackson 6’4″ CBC (’19): A very solid veteran wing player who quietly delivers good play at both ends of the court. He scored 12 points on the evening, with much of the damage coming in the first half as the Cadets built its early advantage. He is also a good defensive player with nice instincts and some quick hands that are good for ball hawking.
