Donavon Gregory scored the game winner and the Appalachian State bound senior led Carmel with 22 points, as the Cougars from Mathews, North Carolina defeated Village Christian, of Fayetteville, to win the NCISAA State Championship.
DeAngelo EppsDeAngelo Epps added 14 points and seven rebounds, for Carmel and Myles Hunter was also in double figures with 13 points.
Gregory is a strong athlete, whose forte is attacking the basket and he finishes really well – often with a bang. He also has improved his perimeter shot, which will open up more driving lanes for him and in turn get him to the free throw line more frequently.
Epps is a strong athlete, with excellent ups and a nose for the ball, especially when it comes to rebounding. He also has touch around the basket and also from 16-17 feet.
Hunter is a junior, with solid all around skills and a very good shooting stroke. He’s shoots it well, especially from mid-range, but he also is a capable shooter from the arc. He will benefit by adding some strength in the off-season, but it his shooting ability that will cause college recruiters to take a strong look at him this spring and summer.

Travion McCray led Village Christian with 28 points and Zavian McLean added 16. Derrick Quansah gave the Knights three double scorers with 10 points. McCray is a fast guard, with good strength, while McLean, pictured above, is very fast and athletic lefty, who is very good in all phases. He attacks the basket and he shoots from the perimeter, equally well. Quansah is a good rebounder and shot blocker, with some touch around the basket and from 8-10 feet.
