The Larry Farmer region is loaded with talent and the group that stood out most is the big men in the region as I expect there to be a battle every night out. Here are some of the top big men in the region.
Quincey Jewett — Rangeview
Jewett is having a phenomenal season this year as a player that has impacted the game on both ends of the floor. He is at 16.6 points and 11.7 rebounds a game and is a big man that makes it really difficult for opposing bigs to get comfortable. He grabs rebounds and goes right back up, uses his long arms to keep the ball alive and also alters plenty of shots at the rim. He can finish at the rim, plays through contact and uses his long slender body to compete inside. On defense he moves his feet well and can switch onto smaller guards, he keeps his hands up and is one of the states interior defenders as he does not allow many shots to get to the rim without being contested. He runs the floor well, has a great motor and his double-doubles have been a big reason as to why the Raiders have been successful this season. He averages 2.7 blocks a game but they will need four or more blocks in the Raiders first two games in which he has done multiple times this season.
Caleb McGill – Grandview
McGill is one of the best big men in the entire state and his size and abilities have Grandview right back where they were last season – favored. He is up to 11.6 points a game and also has recorded 6.2 rebounds a game on a team that has shown that they can win tight, slow paced games and also can get going and run with other teams. McGill runs the floor well and is finesse with the ball. On the break he catches the ball and finishes with either hand or a dunk and is also a willing passer that makes the right play. He not only has a good feel from inside where he can knock down hook shots or mid-range jumpers but he can also score from outside which opens the floor up for his guards and big man tandem with Prim to operate. McGill is one of the most important players on the defending champions squad and is looking to repeat with solid play from within. Get a look at one of the state’s top juniors that is surely a division I player.
Dayne Prim – Grandview
Dayne is one of the best backs to the basket and traditional forwards in the state. He has great strength and quickness and has the footwork to go right up with the ball and catch defenders off guard. When he gets the ball on the block he is patient with the ball as he observes the court and either dishes it off to the open man or has a nice faceup game where he gets to his spots and finishes. He runs the break as well as any guard in the state and can either go up with it himself for the dunk or finish at the rim. He has been the go to scorer for another season and is up to 14.1 points a game as a senior. He led the Wolves to a state championship last season and the tourney MVP is looking to repeat. On defense he is stout and is a glass cleaner as seen by his 7.6 rebounds a game. He is one of the best big men in the state and will surely have Grandview where they need to be.
Grant Figueroa – Rock Canyon
Grant is a force down low. He uses his 6’8 frame to put fear in defenders. He is strong, he is aggressive he is long and he is skilled. He has the ability to change the outcome of the game with only his defense and he has this season. Rock Canyon is one of the best defensive teams in the entire state and it is no coincidence that they have a player of his stature that is able to wreak havoc on opposing big men. On offense he is solid. He puts his body into the defender and powers through them and is not afraid to find contact. He runs the floor well and finishes with either hand. He is at 11.3 points a game and also is grabbing boards. He is averaging 8.6 rebounds a game and cleans the glass and gets it to the open man on the outlet pass. He has had a few athletic finishes this year and dunks through traffic. It is going to be interesting to see how he ups his game offensively in the playoffs but this is as strong of a big man that there is in the region.
Roger Rosengarten – Valor Christian
With just a look at Rosengarten you notice his big size. He is 6’7 and over 250 pounds and has that tough football pedigree to him. What you can’t see is his ability to put the ball on the floor and take defenders off of the dribble. He is able to switch gears and use his moves to catch defenders off guard and then utilizes that size to put weight on the defender and finish over or through the contact. It is difficult to stop a player of his size and he has the strength to move you with his moves. In one on one situations he excels as he is a mismatch more often than not and he makes it difficult for defenders to stop someone who is coming at you to score at that size. He is averaging 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds a game as he is very active down low. He moves well for his size and will be looked at as a player to go at for points early and often.
