On top of that, you must be able to defend 2s, which narrows the list further. Nonetheless, these are our most capable unsigned shooting guards who fit the bill!
Kayin Derden, 6’1” G, Columbus DeSales
An extremely long combo guard ready to make an impact on both sides of the floor at the next level. Efficient player who doesn’t do a lot of side-to-side stuff or have a fancy layup package. Instead, Derden takes what the defense gives him and scores it quickly. Very good outside shooter. Communicates well on defense.
Ryan Hall, 6’4”, Fairmont
Hall was offered by Taylor less than a month back and has drawn plenty of college interest in tandem with the NAIA opportunity. Easy to understand why he’s blowing up as Hall is contributing 17.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists a night for the Firebirds.
A dynamic slasher who can finish with either hand in traffic and blow-by going either direction. Good bounce, which he uses on the glass, and ability to change speeds with the ball in his hands. Hall can play either guard spot and is most effective as the primary creator. Score-minded. His 3-point percentage has jumped from 31 to 37 percent this season.
Demetrius Terry, 6’0”, St. Edward
Terry is an explosive straight-line driver who brings a spark of intensity to both sides of the floor. His edge is complimented by his quickness, both laterally and out of his first step. Challenges shot-blockers at the rim. Will need to become a better shooter at the next level.
DMarco Howard, 6’2”, Hamilton
Howard is an intriguing junior college recruit because of his on-ball defensive ability and athleticism. Strong athlete that looks like a running back in the open floor. Moves his feet extremely well as a point of attack defender. Plays hard at all times. Excellent rebounder. Will need to cut down on turnovers and shoot it better from distance down the line.
Brice Hill, 6’5”, Seven Hills
Hill is a high-academic kid with a terrific outside jumper. Son of a coach, which shows in his IQ. Crafty scorer off the dribble who utilizes the pump-fake to get past the first line of defense. Likes to shoot from the mid-range, opposed to getting all the way to the rim. Capable of hitting turn-around jumpers and other creative shots when posting up a smaller defender.
Payton Moyer, 6’0”, Toledo St. John’s
Moyer is a potent shooting specialist who has been the steadiest offensive contributor at SJJ this season. Elite shooting mechanics coming off screens away from the ball. He can also get into his one-dribble pull-up after getting defenders in the air with pump-fakes. Strong kid who boxes out and defends the drive quite well. Fundamentally sound.
JaJuan “Jay” Rodgers, 6’2”, Pickerington Central
A senior stock-riser who unfortunately is currently sidelined because of OHSAA transfer regulations. This season, he became a more efficient scorer, maximizing his greatest asset: mid-range shooting. Great rhythm on the one- or two-dribble pull-ups for Rodgers. Good size as a combo guard and has the skill to be a primary ball-handler.
Anthony Mazzeo, 6’2”, Massillon Jackson
Mazzeo is a combo guard who is an effective playmaker and shooter either off the dribble or on the catch. Makes the right play on the drive and has a knack for finding open shooters. Has developed into one of the best catch-and-shoot guys in Ohio. After battling injuries in the past, Mazzeo is back to moving pretty well.
Bodie Eberhart, 6’2”, Marysville
Eberhart holds a few Division II football offers and may head that direction next year. However, he remains one of the more underrated shooting guard talents on the board. Eberhart is averaging 16.1 points because of his terrific shooting ability off the catch. He especially likes the corner 3. Pretty slender build but he can also change speeds and finish at the rim off the dribble-drive.
Tehree Horn, 6’2”, Southview
After being the third or fourth option last season, Horn is now leading the Northern Lakes League at 23.0 points per game. His separation moves off the dribble and height allow him to create good looks in the mid-range at will. Could become a better defender, but his shooting and scoring ability cannot be ignored.
Payton Jutte, 6’4”, Fort Recovery
Jutte is a standout catch-and-shoot wing with good size. Likes to put it on the floor for one dribble before pulling up with rhythm. His size gives him the upside of defending multiple positions at the next level.
