This year, the Coastal League prevailed 4-2. The surprise of the day came from San Diego – a team in neither league – beating La Jolla Country Day 68-42.
A bevy of sophomores stood out on the day, so we’ll break down their performances in two reports.
Battle at the Bay – 2021 standouts, Part 1
Dexter Stratton, 6-7 PF, Patrick Henry
Stratton is a prospect poised for a solid jump in our 2021 rankings, due to his elite size, mobility and feel for the face-up four position. Adding toughness on the boards and physicality on defense will only boost his stock.
Keatten Smith, 6-1 SG, Santa Fe Christian
Smith is a cheat code for the Eagles: if he’s open, he rarely misses. The spot-up shooter is a perfect fit in Chad Bickley’s system, as he runs off of flare screens and pin downs and finds space moving without the ball. He hit 6-8 threes in the runaway win over La Jolla.
Trevan Martin, 6-3 W, Santa Fe Christian
A downhill scorer with a nasty streak, Martin gets into the paint and finishes better than most prospects in the class. He’s starting to become a consistent threat from the baseline three off the catch to boot.
Hayden Gray, 6-1 PG, Santa Fe Christian
The ever-crafty lead guard has the ball on the string and sets the table for his hot shooting teammates. Gray also has a very nice runner-floater package that allows him to score in the paint when necessary. Not the fleetest of foot, Gray makes up for it defensively with his deceptive length and quick hands.
AJ Burgin, 6-2 G, San Diego
Despite being face-guarded much of the game, Burgin finished tied with a game-high 19 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Known as potent shooter, Burgin’s handle and scoring off the bounce have made a marked improvement this year, making him a more well-rounded scoring threat.
Derrien Carter-Hollinger, 6-4 W, Foothills Christian
The younger brother of Knights senior Derrick Carter-Hollinger is having a breakout sophomore year. The lefty scoring guard is one of the best corner-three shooters in the class, and has developed a very nice one-dribble pull-up. He has great size for the wing position and a ton of upside.
