This year, the Coastal League prevailed 4-2. The surprise of the day came from San Diego – a team in neither league – beating La Jolla Country Day 68-42.
The junior class has a talented group of guards. We lead off our discussion about the class’ standouts with a look at the back court standouts.
Battle at the Bay – 2020 guards
Alex Bell, 5-10 PG, Serra
Bell had a scintillating finish to the overtime win over Army Navy, scoring 17 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter and OT. Undersized scoring guard gets hot in a hurry, but doesn’t force or hunt shots.
Cobey Harraway, 6-3.5 G, Army Navy
Harraway had a strong start to the game for Army Navy, showing off the range on his jump shot and a nice mid-range pull-up. Harraway has a prototypical next-level frame and nice athleticism. He is a prospect to watch.
Zach White, 6-1 PG, Bishop’s
White had a nice outing in the win over Patrick Henry. He isn’t a burner, but he plays with good pace and understands how to use his body to keep defenders on his hip. Additionally, White is a big-time shooter when his feet are set. He is the type of PG that opponents underestimate because of his stature, but is very productive.
Sam Dudley, 6-2 G, Santa Fe Christian
The crafty scoring guard continues to round into a quality bucket getter from multiple levels. He can shoot off the catch and get into the paint and finish through contact. Dudley also lives at the charity stripe, a testament to his aggressive approach.
Steve Stinson, 5-10 G, Victory Christian
Stinson continues to evolve from an undersized scoring guard to a playmaker for himself and others. He aggressively gets into the paint, and is now seeing the kick-out options when he draws helpside defense. Defensively, he is a tough on-ball defender who plays with a chip on his shoulder.
Miles Williams, 5-9 PG, Christian
The 5-9 point guard is quickly rising the ranks of the top floor generals in the class in San Diego. He’s heady, quick, scores it from three levels and delivers crisp passes to shooter’s pockets. Defensively, he’s deceptive length, quickness and assertiveness allow him to pick up full court.
Kimo Ferrari, 6-0 PG, Francis Parker
Ferrari got the better of Williams in the battle of former teammates, notching a triple double. Ferrari’s improvement as a shooter has been noteworthy. He’s now a consistent threat off the catch.
Yassine Gharram, 6-2 PG, Foothills Christian
Gharram’s passing wizardry was on display in the big win over Mission Bay. He consistently makes the right read, employs the right pass (bounce, chest, overhead), and does it with flair. He scores it capably from all three levels to boot.
