Today we go baseline to baseline with an up and coming guard from the Greater Houston area. We will break down his strengths and weakness. Glance at the outlook of his future in basketball. Let me introduce to you Rommell Williams 6’1 164 lbs Point Guard of Mayde Creek High School (Katy,TX).
Rommell better known by “Mel”, has a great handle on the ball. He has a quick first step that is followed by his power when he starts driving to the rim. Strong for a guard his size. His strength is really the biggest factor of his ability to score when driving. His offensive IQ continues to rise. His jump shot from deep is getting better also. His weakness in his game is his deep ball that has greatly improved throughout the season. Tends to go under screens and not fight through them. Has good on ball defense with good lateral movements.
He is averages are 17.5 points per game, 4.8 assist per game, 4.7 rebounds per game, and 2 steals per game. He is shooting 47% from the field, 38% from behind the arc, and 77% from the foul line. He has help lead his team to a playoff birth. This schools has missed the playoffs for a decade. Mayde Creek Rams finished the season 21-15 overall and finished 3rd in District play at 5-7. Last season they went 6-26 overall.
We were able to catch up with Mel at the Houston TopGuns tryouts this past weekend.
Mel can you talk about how the season went compared to last year? The season has went very well. We have a new coach Anthony Fobb. He’s a great teacher of the game and his intensity has brought out our intensity as a team. He has helped us become way more impactful on the defensive end. He definitely changed the culture over there. He’s the reason why we made the playoffs this year. How is recruitment looking for you right now? It’s pretty slow but I know it will pick up and I know recruiting can take time so I just want to play to the best of my abilities. What is your main focus as a player? To get my teammates involved in the game. Make sure we all our doing our job and working hard for each other. Talk about how your game has changed from last season til this season. Last season I was more of just a three point shooter. I worked a lot on getting to the basket more and finishing through contact, and working more on getting my teammates more involved in the game.
Thank you Mel for the interview. I want to salute him and the Mayde Creek Rams on the big season they were able to have this year. Mel will be playing with the Houston TopGuns for the Spring/Summer Grassroots season.
