It was an action pack day of basketball and brought out some of the best teams in the state of Virginia. My colleague, Jack Herron, put together two lists of standouts while I take a look at five takeaways I have from the event.
Could Arnold Henderson Step Into The Fold During His Time At VCU?
I am going to go out on a limb and say that the preferred walk-on will provide some meaningful playing time during his tenure at VCU. Henderson is a good shooter with a high basketball IQ that plays the lead guard position for St. Christopher’s. He might not play ever at VCU but he will definitely be a good scout team player. I would not be surprised though if in the next few years, I turn my team on and Henderson is on the court for the Rams.
Coppin State Gets A Good One In Izeah Parker
Parker definitely passes the eye test with his height standing out at 6’7, however, he does need to add a good amount of weight to be more productive at the next level. He brings a lot of things to the table as he can score around the basket, rebound on both sides of the ball and is active on defense. There were a numerous amount of times when other media members and myself talked about how he was a nice pickup for Coppin State.
Elvin Edmonds Makes A Statement
Coming in Elvin was not the most talked about recruit especially only being a sophomore but he stole the show Saturday. Finishing with 27 points in front of a Virginia Tech assistant, he lit up the scoreboard all game long. He is in the conversation of being the best shooters in the state for the class of 2021 after he went five of eight from three-point land. I walked away very impressed with his game and he definitely provided a statement in a win against Trinity Episcopal.
Levar Allen Impressed
This was the game that made me buy into Levar of John Marshall. I have always thought he is a nice player but without going too far, I will just say that this game is where I finally bought stock. I would love to see him continue to work on his body and get in shape but this guy can contribute at the right program at the next level. He set up the offense well for John Marshall and was impressive attacking the rim. One important thing to note is that he took good care of the ball when LC Bird was applying pressure.
LC Bird Showed Why They Are The Top Team In Richmond
Number 1 in most rankings around the city, Bird showed why they deserve that ranking. They only went 7 deep on Saturday but have many guys that are capable to score the basketball. They play good team basketball and each play into their roles. If Corbin Slayton does not hit the game winner at the buzzer for Bird, we could be talking about a different number one team in Richmond, but for right now, that spot belongs to LC Bird.
