Here are 5 Takeaways:
Sharks in a rout
University School, ranked No. 17 nationally by MaxPreps and No. 18 by BallIsLIfe.com, made quick work of Chaminade at Chaminade, 70-32, to go 2-0 against the Lions in 2018-19. The Sharks led 21-9 after one quarter and 42-13 by halftime. The game was played with a running clock for half of the fourth quarter. University School has won 7 straight since falling to nationally-ranked Sunrise Christian (Kan.) Jan. 25.
McFarlane, Howard difference-makers
When U-School 2020 guard Roger McFarlane and 2022 Jett Howard are on, the Sharks (22-4) go to another level. You know about Duke 6-10 recruit Vernon Carey Jr. and 2020 playmaker Scottie Barnes … but when McFarlane and Howard are also clicking University School is extremely difficult to beat. Saturday night, McFarlane connected on 5 of 7 shots from the field in the first half for 13 points. He finished with 17. Jett Howard, the younger brother of 2020 Jace Howard, hit for double-digits (12 points) after leading U-School in scoring in the semifinals with 16.
Chaminade big guns struggle
It was difficult watching 2021 guard Thaddius Franklin, of Chaminade-Madonna (20-6). The University of Miami football commit struggled mightily from the floor, going 1 for 11. It was not any better at the free-throw line (1 for 7). Georgia 2019 signee Toumani Camara did what he could, but finished 5 of 17 from the floor. In the first half, Andre Torres’ squad shot 6 for 31 from the floor. Chaminade played University School to a 68-58 game Jan. 26 up in Cape Canaveral.
Carey double-double
The 6-10 Carey was a problem for Chaminade from the start. He had 9 points and 8 rebounds in the opening quarter alone. Carey finished 21 points and 12 rebounds. He only took five shots in the second half and came out with about 4 1/2 minutes to play.
What’s next
Coach Jim Carr and University School will now host a regional quarterfinal against Miami Monsignor Pace on Thursday. The Sharks’ only loss to a Florida program came vs. IMG Academy.
Chaminade will go on the road to play Mater Lakes.
