For most of the season, Live Oak was hovering around a top 10 seed in 5A. They started off the season winning their first 11 games of the year. The problem is, they’ve only gone 1-6 over their last 7 games, but I can’t blame them much for that. They play in the toughest district in the state, a district that came home with two state titles last season in the two toughest divisions. They certainly have the talent to compete any given night, and if they get rolling, they could make a deep playoff run.
West Jefferson (20th Seed)
West Jeff hasn’t quite put things together for a consistent stretch this season, but they definitely aren’t a team I would want to play. They have two guys on their roster ranked in the top 60 in the 2019 class in 5’10 G Dajour Lloyd and 6’4 F Tony White, and that talent can be dangerous in a single game situation. They have some quality wins on their schedule as well, which will certainly give you pause when preparing for them in the playoffs.
Hammond (29th Seed)
When it comes to the playoffs, you should always be worried about the teams that have a player that is good enough to beat you singlehandely, and that’s exactly what Hammond has in 2020 G La’Vell Scott, who is averaging 20 PPG for them this season. They problem for them is that they are matched up with what is probably the best group of guards that 5A has to offer in Bonnabel. If they could have been matched up with a Ponchatoula or Dutchtown instead, I would have liked their chances a lot better.
New Iberia (11th Seed)
Playing New Iberia in the playoffs is like playing the Grizzlies in the NBA playoffs. They are going to make you earn every single bucket, and you aren’t going to get anything easy. Win or loss, you are going to walk away after the game walking a little more gingerly than you were before. When the final buzzer ends, regardless of outcome, you are going to have two thoughts; that sucked, and where’s the nearest ice bath.
East Ascension (10 Seed)
East Ascension is like the souped up version of the same argument I made for Hammond. You never want to go against a player that is talented enough to beat you single handedly. That is what 2020 6’5 G Hobert Grayson, who has moved up every time that we have released the 2020 rankings. He has more help around him, but if he gets hot, he is liable to go for 30 & 13 on a good night. That just isn’t a matchup that I would want to see in the 2nd or 3rd round of the playoffs.
