Even without 2020 guard Christian Shaneyfelt (flu), Lakewood Ranch was able to play well enough to win this one, 61-47.
Here are five takeaways from the night.
Buckley plays clutch
The best player on the floor in this game was Keon Buckley. The 2020 6’0″ guard finished with 18 points in this game for Lakewood Ranch, including 13 in the second half alone. The Mustangs as a team shot 24-of-29 from the free throw line and it was Buckley’s willingness to drive inside that put the game on ice. His vocal leadership continues to be evident and he has added a very muscular frame compared to a season ago.
Wideman flashes
Always a fan favorite because of his pure speed, athleticism and highlight reel dunking ability, 2020 6’5″ guard Malachi Wideman led Riverview with 17 points. The chance is there for Wideman to be a heck of a basketball player. He plays fast paced and is at his best when he creates for others. Wideman can drive to the line with ease at times and has a jumper that is a work in progress. Some college coach will love to have him with the thinking that they can create a high-end prospect.
Young shines inside
Recording nine points in each half, 2019 6’6″ forward Josh Young finished with a game-high 18 points tying Buckley. His presence inside was big for the Mustangs offense and he found openings time and time again down low. Young isn’t overly athletic, but his length, footwork and overall IQ are huge positives. He will certainly play somewhere this fall, colleges can always use 6’6″ athletes who can make jumpers and attack.
Mobley and Millien strike from deep
The Rams were finding openings at times in the Mustangs defense and it was 2020 guard Zach Mobley and 2021 forward Jayven Millien who took advantage. Mobley, a 6’4″ sharpshooter who plays both guard and forward for Riverview had 14 points and really shined at times with his jumper from the corner. Millien, a 6’6″ wing had 12 points and will only get better as he attacks more with his floater and mid-range.
Perez steps up
The biggest x-factor in the game with Shaneyfelt out was 2020 guard Christian Perez. The 5’8″ guard was superb alongside Buckley, scoring 14 points. Perez made some very important 3’s down the stretch and his ball movement, speed and patience helped the team basketball Lakewood Ranch employs.
