Continue ReadingThe Mideastern Conference Semifinals provided a very 2nd game of the evening in rivals New Hanover HS vs Laney HS. Prep Hoops took in the action on the campus of Brunswick Community College in Supply. The Laney HS Buccaneers prevailed in a 45-42 thriller over the rivals from downtown. The Buccaneers swept the Wildcats in the 3 games they played this season and now will look to win the Conference Tourney for the 1st time in 13 years vs Hoggard HS.
MVP : Demarcus McLaurin (2020) – Laney HS (pictured on front)
McLaurin was all active all nigh long in the paint for the Buccaneers before he fouled out with 29.4 seconds left. McLaurin finished with 10 points in the win and helped the Buccaneers get to the Mideastern Conference Championship Game.
Best Rebounder : Demarcus McLaurin (2020) – Laney HS
McLaurin cleaned up on the boards on both ends this evening. McLaurin 6’5 ran the floor well and positioned himself every time in the paint. McLaurin is averaging 15 ppg and 9.6 rebounds this season.
Best Shot Makers : Reece Edwards (2021) – Laney HS and Scotty Deffinbaugh (2020) – New Hanover HS
Edwards finished the night with 11 points while connecting on some three pointers from downtown. Deffinbaugh 5’11 is a off guard for the Wildcats. Edwards and Deffinbaugh both will be back to play next season for there teams.
Future is Bright : Maleec Myers (2022) and Abraham Driver (2022)
The Wildcats finished the regular season at (15-10) before heading into the playoffs. The Wildcats have some bright pieces for the future for Head Coach Kirk Angel. Myers 5’7 point guard plays with a fearless attitude and grittiness on the floor. Myers finished the night with 12 points and never came off the floor for the Wildcats.
Driver 6’4 post player showed some good flashes and will be find down the road with just more playing time and skill work.
Career Coming to a End : Sherod Sidbury (2019) – Laney HS
Sidbury will play his last basketball game in the Conference Championship vs Hoggard HS. The Laney HS Buccaneers won’t be eligible for postseason play do to a altercation with Pender County HS earlier this season. Sidbury has been a fixture for the Buccaneers on the hardwood and the football field over the past 4 years.
