Dillard took a 3-1 record vs. Ely in Big 8 championship games into the contest but it would be defending FHSAA Class 8A state champion Ely that came out on top of this one, 67-64. Ely has won 11 consecutive games heading into the postseason.
Here are 5 Takeaways from the game.
Scott named MVP
Ely 6-5 senior Joshua Scott gave the Tigers the lead for good, 63-61, with two free throws with 37.2 seconds remaining. Scott scored seven of Ely’s final nine points to keep Dillard at bay. He nailed a 3-pointer with 1:30 left and then went 4 for 4 from the free-throw line down the stretch.
For his clutch play, Scott was named the game’s MVP. Scott finished with 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 6 of 6 from the free-throw line. He also had a handful of rebounds. Scott is finishing strong and hoping to move up the boards of college recruiters.
All-Tournament Team
Scott headlined the 2019 BCAA Big 8 All-Tournament team.
Also honored were Ely 2020 guards A.J. Staton-McCray (6-4) and Tyrecke Francois (5-11); Dillard senior guard Deshawn Bartley (5-10) and 2020 forward Jalen Haynes (6-8); Deerfield Beach 2019 Faizon Francis (5-11); and Miramar 2021 Khamaury McMillian (6-0).
Senior leadership
Dillard’s Bartley showed excellent senior leadership and point guard skills in the tournament. He nailed a 3 late to get the Panthers within 65-64 in the final seconds but it would not be enough. Bartley led coach Darryl Burrows’ crew with 23 points, including going 10 for 10 from the free-throw line Saturday night. 5-11 junior Darryl Burrows connected on five big, big 3-pointers on the way to a 17-point performance.
Ely holds down Dillard bigs
Ely’s inside defenders did a nice job on Dillard’s bigs — especially in the second half. Haynes (7 points, 7 rebounds) was held to 1 point in the second half after getting 6 in the first two quarters. Panthers senior Makerere Williams (7 points, 7 rebounds) made just 1 of 5 field goal attempts in the second half. 6-3 2020 Chandler Mack struggled to a 1-of-5 shooting night and was just 2 for 8 at the free-throw line. The BCAA title is Ely’s fifth in the history of the event — all coming since 2010.
15 for Francois
Francois connected on three 3-pointers for Ely on the way to 15 points. He was 5 for 8 from the field overall. Freshman Kolby King, from off the JV roster, came in and gave coach Melvin Randall some big minutes. King finished with 4 points. And 6-5 2020 Malachi Hazelton was back on the floor Saturday after being held out of Friday’s semifinal for unspecified reasons. The loss is Dillard’s first in nine games since losing at Ely on Jan. 12.
