The star power didn’t fully reflect the outcome of the game as the Knights completely unraveled the Bears emotionally and physically, defeating them 82-66. Northwest improved to (16-5) on the season and John Marshall fell to (18-3).
Regardless of the outcome, there are five players that stuck out and made a huge difference for their team.
NWC Guard/Forward-Skylar Elliott:
Elliot was one of the seniors honored in Northwest Classen’s senior night. When the emcee announced his plans after high school, they said Elliott plans to play college basketball. After Friday night’s matchup, he’ll surely find a place on a college roster. Elliott was a master of reading the defense and finding seams to slip through, providing an easy option for the ballhandler. Fourteen of his 24 points came off layups where he found an open spot behind John Marshall’s zone. He was also one of a few that were aggressive in the transition, constantly going at defenders instead of shying away from contact.
NWC Guard-Davion Warden:
Warden was one of, if not the most athletic player on the court in a game full of stout athletes. Whenever he wanted to score, or whenever Northwest needed to score, Warden could get a bucket. His versatile ability to take you off the dribble or pull up from long-distance is what makes him special. Plus, we mentioned his athleticism. He had a couple of unbelievable finishes at the rim that no one in the gym saw coming.
John Marshall Guard-Davion Knight:
Knight was really the only player that came to play for John Marshall. When other players just didn’t seem to be under control, Knight was the one to slow things up and evaluate the defense and since Northwest Classen’s interior defense was great the entire game, Knight resorted to shooting threes and hit 4-of-6 and finished with a team-high 22 points.
John Marshall Guard-D.J. Alexander:
Alexander didn’t have any gaudy numbers but his defensive play was impressive and so was his outside shooting. Netting 2-of-3 threes helped make this game closer for the Bears. If it weren’t for Alexander and Knight, the Bears would have lost by at least 25 points.
NWC Guard-M. Moore:
Moore also didn’t score a ton but finished with 15 points on hard-earned baskets, similar to his teammate, Elliot. He didn’t complicate much on offense but he complicated everything for John Marshall’s offense. Moore was the most hard-nosed player for the Knights and that’s what made the biggest difference in them stopping the Bears athleticism.
