Continue ReadingWith every rankings update, we have a lot of movement up and down the list. There is usually even more movement early in these rankings like where we are now. This being the first 2022 class update, we have had kids come from unranked to highly ranked and others have made moderate movements up the rankings. Here are 2022’s top ranked point guards as of the first class rankings update:
- Turner Buttry, Bowling Green – Since the first rankings, Buttry has moved into a starting role for the Purples and continues to justify his ranking as he helps lead Bowling Green to a possible Sweet Sixteen berth. His high IQ and shooting ability are impressive but he will need to continue becoming more athletic over the next few years to reach his potential.
- Jordan Akal, Harlan – Akal is a high level scorer who will end up high on the Kentucky career scoring lists by the time he graduates. Already closing in on 1,000 career points as he completed his freshman season for the Green Dragons, Akal has grown and continues to get stronger. Don’t be surprised if Jordan is near the top of this list a year from now.
- Tre Irvin, Trinity – Irvin spent his freshman season playing freshman and JV for the Rocks but he has shown enough ability in AAU and camps to maintain a high ranking for now. He’s a very flashy point guard that should be a big piece at Trinity in the coming years.
- Brady Dingess, Paintsville – Brady is about as good now as he’s going to be but there’s nothing wrong with that. Dingess has a strong basketball IQ but is not a particularly great shooter and tends to feast on weaker competition. He has routinely struggled against the best teams in the 15th region. I’d like to see him go head to head with the other guards in this list in camp or AAU settings.
- Jaxon Smith, Lincoln County – A big riser who went from 33rd to 21st in this update, Smith has started to come along as the season has moved ahead. He averaged 12 points and 3 rebounds in his second season as a varsity starter for the Patriots. His shot mechanics need some work but his percentages went up over the season to finish with splits of 48/41/71.
Other Names to Know:
