Projection: MM+
In my opinion, Dean is the most intruiging prospect left in Louisiana in the 2019 class. He is 6’9, with skills, and he might be the bounciest player in the state. This season is really the first time that basketball has had his full attention, as he is also a D1 level pitcher on the baseball field. He is also really young for his grade. All of that leads to a super high ceiling. Last summer was his first time playing on one of the AAU circuits, and he played 16u for half of the summer, both of which has lead to him being pretty under-recruited. I could see him going to low major program and being able to play both sports, but I could also see him playing AAU in April as an unsigned senior and getting picked up by a higher level program.
Charlie Russell 6’7 SF Sophie B. Wright
Projection: LM-MM
Russel is another player that I feel is definitely under-recruited. He has ideal size for his position at the next level, is really bouncy, and can really shoot the ball at a high level. At his size, he is more than capable of defending multiple positions at the next level, and would definitely be really good for a college program looking to go “positionless.” The only problem is that despite being a top 10 prospect for the 2019 class, he is probably the 3rd best prospect on his high school team. Now, that isn’t a knock at all against Russell, just more of a compliment to his teammates. Whatever school winds up taking a chance on Russell is going to get an absolute steal.
Torey Cargo 6’4 Wing Landry-Walker
Projection: LM-D2
There is a bit of a step down between the top two prospects on this list and the next two, but I could definitely see everyone on this list excelling at the D1 level. Cargo is definitely going to be a specialist at the next level. He is an absolute knockdown shooter, and has more than enough size to be able to do that at the next level. He is a prototypical 3&D for a low major college program, with long arms and good lateral movement. At his size, he is also capable of seeing over the defense when attacking closeouts, and uses the same vision he uses on the football field (where he plays quarterback) to make the correct read on help defenders.
Devon Jefferson 6’4 Wing St. Augustine
Projection: LM-D2
Of the players that are featured in this article, I definitely think that Jefferson is the most skilled. I think he could reliably play both the 2 and the 3 for a low major program at the next level. He is a fantastic shooter from deep, despite a bit of an unorthodox form, and I think his shooting ability will allow him to see the court early in his career at the next level. However, I think he has the athletic ability to grow his role as he gets older. He still needs to work on his ball handling ability, but from my understanding, he is an absolute gym-rate, so I have faith that he will get to that point.
