20) Matt Mensia | 6’4” | Maury (#70 Overall)
With a good frame and a good IQ, Mensia is able to contribute to the game in a number of ways on both ends of the floor. He’s strong and tough enough to guard in the paint when they need him to despite being a wing, and he rebounds well for his size. He’s the glue guy who can make shots, makes the right play and plays hard the whole time he’s in.
19) Charles Tart | 6’4” | Varina (#67 Overall)
He would start almost anywhere else in the state, and he’s the perfect guy to round out a rotation or be the sixth man. Tart has tremendous length and bounce on the wing, allowing him to make plays in transition above the rim and make it difficult on ball handlers with his length. He’s a good catch-and-shoot guy, and players feed off his athleticism and energy on both ends of the floor.
18) Chris Shelton | 6’4” | Louisa (#64 Overall)
Shelton is a guy who I may have ranked way too low because I don’t see him enough, but every time I have seen the Louisa win he’s impressed. He’s a lights out shooter from deep who doesn’t need much to get him going, and he’s a guy who moves well without the ball and can create his own shot with the ball. He’s also a smart and crafty player on both ends with a great basketball IQ.
17) Daryl Mackey | 6’2” | West Potomac (#60 Overall)
The best part of Mackey’s game is that he’s instant offense and when he gets it rolling he’s very tough to stop. He has the whole repertoire offensively as you can play him on or off the ball, he moves well and can get to his spots and he can score the ball from all three levels. He gets to the line when he’s struggling to get some easy ones and it doesn’t take long for him to turn that around and get it going.
16) Jairus Ashlock | 6’1” | John Marshall (#53 Overall)
Another natural scorer, Ashlock just flat out knows how to play the game and has tremendous feel. He doesn’t need to dominate the ball to score it but he can score from all three levels, has a great pull-up game and is capable of putting up buckets quickly. He’s a strong player who can finish through contact and isn’t afraid to crash the glass either.
15) Caleb Dawkins | 6’2” | Grassfield (#51 Overall)
Dawkins has had a terrific high school career at Grassfield and once he fills out he should become an even better player moving forward. First off, he can flat out shoot it from anywhere and, like his brother Andre, has effortless range and great consistency from deep. Defensively he’s a terrific on ball defender who moves his feet and has active hands. It’s somewhat of an enigma as to why Dawkins doesn’t have more recruitment going on right now.
14) Alex Fitch | 6’4” | Rock Ridge (#46 Overall)
Sticking with the trend of shooters, Fitch is a guy who lights it up with the best of them. He’s Rock Ridge’s all-time leading scorer and one of the top scorers in the DMV, and with his size at 6’4” along with a quick release he’s able to get his shot off against a lot of defenders. He can attack closeouts in limited dribbles and is a crafty guy who can get to the line for easy ones a lot.
13) Lance Monteiro | 6’5” | LC Bird (#44 Overall)
Monteiro is the late bloomer of the group who has shown since transferring to LC Bird this season that he’s much more than just a good shooter with good size. Monteiro’s skill set at 6’5” includes the ability to shoot it from deep, put it on the deck in the half court as a drive-and-kick guy and he can beat the press, he’s a solid athlete and good finisher in transition and he’s a heady defender. As he continues to fill out and develop I expect Monteiro to be a steal at the next level.
12) Daryl Anderson | 6’6” | Miller School (#38 Overall)
Anderson recently committed to Norfolk State in the midst of a solid senior season, and the lanky wing has earned it with his development. With his length and skill set, Anderson has the chance to be a solid 3 and d guy at the next level. The lefty has a smooth stroke off the catch and off one or two dribbles, his handle is underrated and he’s a good off ball defender who can use his length to deny scorers on the perimeter.
11) Khyree Temple | 6’5” | Phoebus (#37 Overall)
As far as athleticism and talent go, Temple is at the top of the group, but it’s been academic situations and injuries that have forced him to miss a significant amount of games in his career since moving to Virginia three years ago. Now eligible and healthy, Temple is having a tremendous senior season. At 6’5” he’s one of the most athletic kids in the state, and he’s able to block shots and throw down ridiculous dunks, along with make plays on both ends and on the glass that other players on the floor simply can’t make.
