While there were obviously many more, we picked 15 guys who we didn’t feature in the positional breakdowns, and ones who have made huge impacts in their senior season and that’s why they were chosen. Here’s a look at part one of the new faces of our rankings.
Girardi Cubillan | 6’6” F | James Monroe (#71 Overall)
The Venezuelan native had a terrific breakout year at James Monroe and says he plans on prepping to hopefully get a scholarship to play in college. The 6’6” forward has all of the right physical and athletic tools to get it done with development. He’s strong and quick, he plays above the rim, he’s a decent shooter with good form and with development he’ll be a versatile guy moving forward.
Zhamare Slade | 6’5” F | Surry County (#76 Overall)
We never really got to see Slade because he plays in a smaller market but I got a chance to check him out in a Fall League game which led to checking more tape and more games and he’s certified now as District Player of the Year on a state title contender. Slade plays all over the floor for Surry, as he’s versatile enough to shoot and handle it in transition but he’s also strong enough to guard in the post and athletic enough to play above the rim.
Tyson Brown | 6’7” PF | Kempsville (#77 Overall)
The kid just kept growing and kept getting better and now he’s looking like a possible steal out of the 757 area. There’s rumors he may prep, which would probably help Brown who’s biggest need is simply physical and skill development. If he fills out you’re looking at worst at a face up four who can put it on the deck, protect the rim, switch on pick-and-rolls and play above the rim; and if he continues to develop you’re looking at him possibly being able to transition to play on the wing.
Devin Parrish | 6’4” WG | Patriot (#84 Overall)
Parrish checks all of the boxes as far as size, skill and bounce to play at the next level as a guard, and over his high school career he has shown the ability to be productive and lead a winning team. He excels as an outside shooter where he has great form and consistency, he’s a smart player who makes the right play on both ends consistently and he’s an underrated finisher and ball handler as well. He has a well rounded game with the ability to make shots.
Matt Brown | 6’1” WG | Hargrave (#88 Overall)
Brown has had a great showing for Hargrave so far in his senior season, and it’s his attacking mentality that makes him so important to their team. When Hargrave needs a bucket, Brown isn’t afraid to step up and make a play. He has a good and strong frame, he’s a solid athlete who can play both guard positions and he has a competitive edge about him on both ends of the floor.
Dylan Catron | 6’7′ PF | Chilhowie (#105 Overall)
One of the top players in Southwest Virginia, Catron plays in about the smallest market in the state but he’s well known by college coaches for his skill set at his size. While he needs to fill out physically, at 6’7” he has great length and great touch from all over the floor. His size allows him to play in the post defensively but he’s much more comfortable offensively on the perimeter where he can knock down shots and stretch the defense for his guards to attack the paint.
Kai Lockhart | 6’2” G | Oscar Smith (#106 Overall)
Lockhart put up big numbers as a junior at Hickory, and while he isn’t putting up as big of numbers at Smith who has more talent he’s been somewhat of an X-factor for the top Class 6 school in the state. He has decent size as a guard and while he’s able to play the point he’s also a smart shotmaker off the ball. He moves well and understands spacing and he has the knack to be in the right place at the right time.
Kris Norman | 5’10” G | Great Bridge Christian (#108 Overall)
Norman was homeschooled until this year so not many people knew who he was, but on a GCA team that’s loaded with size and talent he’s making a name for himself as a skilled shot maker. Norman isn’t the biggest or most athletic, but he has an uncanny ability to get to his spots and make shots from all over the floor. He can spray it from deep, get in the middle and shoot the midrange and he can do it on or off the ball.
