One of the most entertaining games of the event was between the high-octane, highly-regarded Hayti Indians and the Hancock Tigers led by one of the more impressive 2020 prospects in the state in 6’5 wing Sam Richardson. Hayti got off to a blazing hot start cruising to a 44-24 lead and kept a 20+ point cushion into the 3rd quarter in what looked to be a blowout. Hancock showed some grit and resolve and battled all the way back behind several impressive individual performances and eventually took the lead with under 3 minutes to play in the game. However, if there is one thing we know about the Indians, they know how to win. They executed well and locked down the final few possessions and escaped with a thrilling 80-76 victory. Check out our “10 Best” from this rollercoaster ride.
MVP: Ivory Winters – Hayti
The 6’1 220 Indiana Hoosier football signee is a physical specimen that imposed his will throughout the contest. He has a relentless motor and despite his height, he plays BIG in the paint. He scored at will inside using his strength to get good positioning near the rim and for offensive boards. It also helps that he is an exceptional athlete who runs the floor very well and can jump out of the gym.
Best Offensive Performance: Sam Richardson – Hancock
Sam is one of the leading scorers in the St. Louis metro area and despite a slow start he was a large part of Hancock’s big run to get them back in the game. He had 20 points, wowing the crowd numerous times with his acrobatic finishes in transition. He continues to show confidence with his improving range, knocking down a contested short corner jumper and a deep pull-up three.
Best Defensive Performance: Siah Moultrie – Hancock
It was likely the best all around game of the season for the 6’5 senior forward and he certainly stood apart from the crowd on the defensive end. He absolutely owned the paint, finishing with 6 blocks and an incredible 20 rebounds. He is long, athletic, and has a great nose for the ball. He continues to be a drive deterrent and shot altering specialist.
Standout Senior: Jerrod Covington – Hayti
Jerrod proved to be a gifted two way player at the Charleston Shootout. He is a tough on ball defender and showed off the full array of offensive skills. He nailed a pair of corner threes, had a couple off tough pull-up jumpers off the dribble, and was one of the only Indians successful in attacking and scoring at the rim over Moultrie.
Best Overall Athlete: Ivory Winters – Hayti
Some of this goes without saying, Ivory will be playing Big 10 football as a running back next season. He is rated as a 3-star recruit and is a tremendous multi-sport athlete. He clearly had the most complete combo of strength, size, and athletic ability on the court throughout the game.
Sharpshooter: Adrian Evans – Hancock
Adrian was unconscious from beyond the arc in Hancock’s huge comeback. He drilled 6 three-pointers, most of which of the catch and shoot variety. There was one heat check in particular where he pulled up from NBA range and splashed one home that forced a Hayti timeout. He finished with a team high 22 points for the Tigers.
Mr. Ice Water: Tyleik Moore – Hayti
Check my twitter @CWilkScout for reference, Hayti sophomore guard Tyleik Moore has the clutch factor. He beat the buzzer with a three pointer to end the first quarter. He beat the buzzer again at the half with a 30 foot bomb. He also stepped up to the free throw line in the final seconds and buried two free throws to seal the win for the Indians.
Paint Patrol: Ivory Winters – Hayti / Siah Moultrie – Hancock
These two went back and forth inside the entire game, each finishing with impressive performances. Both had double doubles. Both were dominant on both ends of the boards. Both had multiple eye-popping blocks. These two young men got after it for 32 minutes and it was a treat to watch.
Hustlin’ Hustlin: Jeremiah Williams – Hancock
Jeremiah wins the hustle award for this game. He stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers. It seemed like he was on the floor for every loose ball and in so many key moments he rebounded a miss and put it back for two. Very impressive effort by the junior that gave some much needed life and energy to his team and helped spark a rally.
Rising Star: Tyleik Moore – Hayti / Adrian Evans – Hancock
Talk about a pair of sophomores to keep an eye on! Both teams have some talented upperclassmen, but Tyleik and Adrian absolutely made their presence felt. Tyleik has the skills and swagger to be one of the leaders for a historically tough Hayti program over the next couple of years. Adrian will have another year of teams zeroing in on Sam Richardson, and if he continues to connect on the long range bombs his numbers will open plenty of eyes.
