Catch up on all of the action as Prep Hoops Wisconsin gives you a rundown of some of the top individual and team performances from throughout week seven of the high school season.
Players of the Week
Kevin Cook (6’6 2019 F, Milwaukee Bay View)- Kevin Cook has been having a breakout year at Bay View, and his improvements were put on display last week as he put together arguably his two best games of the season. Taking on a tough Milwaukee Madison squad on Thursday, Kevin used his length to dominate, scoring 32 points and hauling in 11 rebounds in the close win. He followed that up on Friday against Cedarburg, scoring 19 points to go along with 12 rebounds in a win for Bay View. Kevin has been a force inside all season, shooting 63% from the field while averaging nearly 18 points a contest. Still developing as a shooter, once Kevin can extend his range he will be a very dangerous piece in the City Conference.
JaKobe Thompson (6’1 2021 G, Racine Case)- One of the top sophomore guards in the state, JaKobe Thompson showed off his scoring prowess in a win over conference opponent Kenosha Tremper. In the 83-80 win JaKobe scored 31 points, his most in a game since he dropped 32 in the season opener. The smooth lefty guard is so crafty when attacking the rim, and by combining his finishing ability with his knack for drawing fouls, JaKobe is extremely difficult to stop around the rim. With a nice pull-up jumper from mid-range, and an improving three point shot, JaKobe is a threat to score the moment he steps on the court.
Tyler Robarge (6’8 2019 F, Chippewa Falls)- An athletic frontcourt player, Tyler Robarge had one of his best career games this past week. Taking on Eau Claire Memorial, the Michigan Tech recruit did not miss a single shot (9-9 FG and 4-4 FT) on his way to a 22 point game. One of the better forwards in the state’s 2019 class, Robarge combines his height and athleticism to dominate inside and get above the rim to finish. Tyler’s consistent performances fly perhaps a bit under the radar, but his 22 point game proved just why he’s up to the task of playing at the Division 2 level in college.
David Skogman (6’10 2019 F, Waukesha West)- After constantly improving his game over the past few years, David has developed into a player that many high major schools have their eyes on, and his performance last week against Waukesha South proved why he’s such a coveted prospect. In a big win for West, David scored 30 points while shooting 13-18 from the field. That game was one point shy of his career high. The 6’10 big also snagged 11 rebounds and blocked 5 shots, absolutely dominating the game inside. David possesses a soft touch to finish inside, with a baby hook shot that is nearly unguarable at the high school level. Perhaps most impressive about David’s game is his shooting range. He has a three point shot that extends well beyond even the college arc, and that versatility has a lot of Division One coaches watching him closely.
Jalen Tolliver (6′ 2020 G, Young Coggs Prep)- One of the Milwaukee area’s breakout players this year has been Jalen Tolliver, who has been scoring at a high level all season long. Taking on Deerfield on Saturday, Jalen went off for 37 points in an overtime win for Young Coggs Prep. That marked his second highest scoring total of the season, and his fifth game scoring 30+ points. The rising guard has shown the ability to score inside, while extending his range to beyond the arc. Knocking down 4 three pointers against Deerfield, Jalen showed his ability to stretch the defense with his shooting, and then exploit them in the lane.
Team of the Week
Milwaukee Bay View- Going 2-0 in a shortened week against a couple of quality opponents, Milwaukee Bay View made their presence felt. Taking on a Milwaukee Madison team that has been among the best in Division 2 this season, Bay View’s top players stepped up to bring home an 84-81 win. Kevin Cook paved the way with 32 points and 11 rebounds, one of three Bay View players to record a double-double. Junior guard Kaleel McCray scored 18 points while dishing out 10 assists, and Shelton Williams-Dryden scored 13 points and pulled in 16 rebounds. That success led to another win the very next day, as Bay View took down Cedarburg 77-62. Malcolm Pickett was dominant, scoring 28 points on 14-17 shooting, while teammate BJ Hentz dished out 14 assists in the win. Bay View has a lot of length, and a variety of players who can step up on any given night, making them a very dangerous team in the City Conference.
Statement Win of the Week
Elkhorn takes down Racine St. Catherine’s 51-49- It was a big week for Elkhorn going 2-0, including a big time win over Division 3 powerhouse Racine St. Cat’s. Nick Brown was the catalyst for Elkhorn, dominating the game inside with St. Cat’s big man in foul trouble, using his length and soft touch to get some easy buckets. He finished with a game high 23 points for the Elks. The Umnus twins (Vince and Luke), both scored 8 points, with Vince knocking down a couple of outside shots while Luke was finding success penetrating the lane. That penetration allowed Luke to knock down a floater with just seconds remaining on the clock to give Elkhorn the lead, and ultimately the win at the Hank Raymonds Classic.
Sleeper of the Week
Joey Immekus (6’2 2020 G, Martin Luther)- Everyone knows what Joey Immekus wants to do with the ball in his hands, yet no one seems to be able to stop the junior guard from knocking down three after three. Joey led Martin Luther to a blowout win last week against St. Thomas More behind 27 points off of 9-14 shooting from beyond the arc. Immekus isn’t afraid to let shots fly from distance, and when he’s knocking them down at over 50% on the season, it’s hard to disagree with the shot selection. Joey’s ability to knock down the three ball opens up a lot of space for his teammates, constantly getting defenders to bite on pump-fakes to draw over a help defender. Whether coming off the bench or starting, Joey has been excelling at his role for Division 3’s top squad.
Freshman of the Week
Jeff Brazziel (6’5 2022 G, Milwaukee Bradley Tech)- Brazziel has continued to improve and adjust as the high school season goes on, and his performances as just a freshman have been impressive to say the least. The lengthy guard filled up the box score and had one of his best games of the season in a win over Milwaukee North last Thursday. Brazziel scored 23 points while pulling in a season’s best 16 rebounds. The freshman also dished out 4 assists and came up with 3 steals on the defensive end. One of the state’s highly regarded freshmen, Brazziel continues to impress night-in and night-out for Milwaukee Bradley Tech.
