Well we are going to take a closer look at some of the candidates and although it will still be up for debate, the perspective of what each player will bring to the table will be clearer to all.
Charlotte Christian JC Tharrington: With so many scoring guards in the state, he is one of the few that looks to make his impact more through assist than scoring. His assist are up even more this season as he is averaging 7.7 a game which would put him in the top 2/3 in the state. He’s matched up with some other top notch guard and performed well in just about every matchup, he’s one of those guys that plays the game with a chip on his shoulder.
Fayetteville Academy John Michael Wright: His numbers this season has been outstanding and he has led his team to an 11-2 record against good teams. He does a bit of everything for his squad: scoring, rebounding, assist, defense, and plays a high amount of minuets on a nightly basis.
Athens Drive DJ Robertson: A downhill type of guard, he’s a difficult player to try and contain once he’s coming at you. He already has signed with Northern Kentucky and we feel he can make a nice impact very early on. Scoring the ball is something he does well but we have also seen him make some on point passes, solid overall player.
South Central HS Shykeim Phillips: You won’t see a ton of trash talking from him, he’s more of the type of player that lets his play speak. Scoring the ball is not an issue for him but he’s not a selfish player at all, he can play within the flow of an offense and be highly efficient.
Village Christian Travion McCray: More of a scoring guard, you can play him on or off the ball. He’s not necessarily having the huge performances on a nightly basis that he did last year but we have seen him put on some impressive scoring performances a few times this year.
Quality Education El Ellis: He’s a player that can score the ball at a very high level in various ways and has impressive athletic ability to go along with it. Just about every time we have seen him play, he’s going for 30/40 points and putting down some big time dunks. He brings it on the defensive end of the floor as well, using his lateral quickness to cause deflections and turnovers.
Trinity Christian Talton Jones: More of a slashing type of guard that can make plays for others, he brings more of the traditional PG style. On the defensive end is where he may be the most impressive, he does a great job of making things difficult for opponents with his wingspan.
