We take a look at some of the standout performers from the day’s first three games below, with standouts from the latter three games of the day coming in a future article.
PG Jake Hilmer (North Linn, 2019)
The top performer of the day should come as no surprise to anyone. The state’s all-time leader in steals and assists, Hilmer was dominant throughout North Linn’s big win over Aplington-Parkersburg, finishing with 24 points (on 8-16 shooting) and 13 assists. The speed at which he plays, with limited mistakes and fantastic decision making, is mind boggling. Upper Iowa is getting a steal with Hilmer.
F Trevor Boge (North Linn, 2019)
Another standout from North Linn, the 6-3 forward showcased a little bit of everything in his arsenal on Saturday, going 8-12 from the floor (including 2-3 from the arc) en route to 20 points and 11 rebounds. He has a smooth stroke from the arc, although at the small school level he doesn’t have to be on the perimeter much. He runs the floor well and finishes at the rim with either hand, and he blocked two shots on the defensive end to boot.
G Keegan Kohorst (Mount Pleasant, 2020)
It’s hard to be much more efficient than the junior guard was in Mount Pleasant’s win over Camanche, as he scored 25 points on just 10 field goal attempts (3-7 2P, 2-3 3P, 13-14 FT). He also dished out six assists and had six rebounds. He was crucial in the fourth quarter, going 8-9 from the free throw line to help close out the upset win.
PF Sam Beatty (Mount Pleasant, 2019)
The top scorer on the season for the Panthers, Beatty, a 6-4 forward, was dominant on the glass for Mount Pleasant, pulling down 11 rebounds to go with 12 his points. He showed the ability to get to the rim off the dribble, step out and hit a 3 and attack the glass relentlessly on both ends of the floor. It was a strong, versatile showing for the senior forward.
SG Jaxon Hoyle (Mount Pleasant, 2020)
The junior wing came off the bench to provide the Panthers with a major spark in the second half, scoring 15 points on 5-8 3-point shooting in the final 16 minutes. A 6-2 wing with a smooth, quick release, Hoyle had a career day as he entered the game just 2-12 from behind the arc this season.
GF Caleb Delzell (Camanche, 2020)
The 6-7 wing wasn’t the Indians leading scorer, or even the second leading scorer for that matter. He finished with nine points on just 2-6 shooting, but he showcased the all-around ability that makes him an intriguing prospect moving forward. He’s huge with point guard skills, is a gifted passer, and the ball handling keeps getting tighter. He’s a talented playmaker who had seven rebounds and five assists with his nine points while also showing the ability to defend multiple spots
