Continue ReadingThe stat line of the night which really set the tone for Wednesday was Josh Rogers of Arvada West absolutely exploding. He has been on a tear for the season and he finished with his most impressive game of the year in a 69-63 win over Dakota Ridge. Rogers put up 41 points including hitting seven 3-pointers which secured the victory. When he is shooting this way this is a pretty good team. They have had a couple of losses that has knocked them out of the top-10, but with play like this they will be back in no time.
Across town it was a Centennial league battle between Grandview and Mullen that seen the defending champions get another win. In the win it was big man Caleb McGill that really had his way. He scored 25 points and also knocked down a couple 3-pointers as well. He also showcased his soft touch around the rim and proved why he is one of the best big men in the state. With his size he can take over games.
Cheyenne Mountain got them a close an emotional 65-61 win against Air Academy. Cheyenne Mountain had plenty to play for with the loss of a teammate and they rallied together in his honor. The player that stood out in this one is a player that has been bringing it all season long and has placed his bid as one of the top players in the state, Javonte Johnson. Johnson was carving up the defense and staying aggressive. He got to the free-throw line often and converted, knocked down a 3-pointer and also on the boards as well. He had 23 points on the night and continued his great play. Johnson is a big-time player that the state must check out.
Senior Payton Kaiser of Vista Ridge recorded 21 points in their 49-47 loss to Sand Creek. He knocked down 3 3-pointers but also has shown that he is not afraid to let it fly. He is the leading scorer for this Vista Ridge bunch and has done everything in his power to try and keep them into games.
Lewis Palmer put a beating on Palmer Ridge and with that came some big scores from multiple players. The two most consistent players on this undefeated Lewis Palmer unit are Joel Scott and Matthew Ragsdale. Ragsdale is proving that his injury was a small setback as he has returned and got right back into his scoring ways. He finished with a game-high 20 points and applied pressure for the full time that he was in the game. His running mate, Scott, had 17 points and stayed on the attack throughout the night before resting. Lewis Palmer has a big upcoming game against Cheyenne Mountain so will be tweaking things to make a statement there I’m sure and both Ragsdale and Scott I am sure will bring their best.
In the game of the night there were fireworks as many players stepped up and separated themselves from the bunch. The guard play was something to watch as Hezekiah Swanson had plenty of big plays that were not seen on the stat sheet. The opposing guard is a player that plenty have come to know, Quentin Rock. Rock was his usual self. Dishing it off, knocking down shots, penetrating the defense and making the right play and was great in another Centennial league battle. He finished with 18 points on the night and has been consistent all season long.
In that same game it was understood that big man Ike Graham would show up and score as there are not many players in the state this big and capable of slowing him down. He has incredible size and great footwork and he kept Overland alive with timely baskets but did not do it alone. He recorded 15 points on the night and made the defense adjust multiple times.
Jalon’e Rice is not knock for his scoring but made sure that he stepped up and attempted to secure the upset. He had 15 points on the night to try and get the win over Smoky Hill. If Rice is a player that could get it going that gives this team more weapons offensively and makes them an even more dangerous bunch.
Kenny Foster from Smoky Hill had one of those special nights. He finished with 29 points including 14 of the teams 18 points in the fourth quarter and continued his strong play. He is the favorite for Mr. Basketball and plays like his buzzer beating 71-70 finish just up his chances.
