Luckily for them, Virginia is full of guys who can play at all of the levels and are balling out their senior year. Over the next week or so, I’ll be doing best available lists for guards, wings and bigs. There’s a lot of names I want to get out there, so to make things easier I broke them up into different parts.
Here’s a look at the part three of the best available bigs in VA.
Lawson Quinn | 6’8” | Central VA Homeschool
A homeschool kid, Quinn is under the radar because he doesn’t play for a major program but he’s a scholarship level talent for sure. At 6’8”, he has good ball skills and can score out to 20 feet, he’s long and tough in the paint and he’s a good athlete that can finish above the rim.
Tyson Brown | 6’8” | Kempsville
A late bloomer who may still need a year, Brown has come on the last two years as a face up big with good length and athleticism. He can take his man off the bounce, he uses his length to protect the rim and has good timing as a rim protector and he’s really good in the 18 feet and in range. Still needs to put on weight and develop some but he has tools to work with moving forward.
Tyrese Tingle | 6’7” | Matoaca
Tingle is another guy who may need another year to work on his body, but as far as offensive game goes he has the tools. The 6’7” big can score inside-out, he runs the floor and finishes well and he’s able to find open guys once he’s double-teamed. While he isn’t a knock down three-point shooter he can step out and make them and that changes the whole defense as well.
Jake Latta | 6’5” | South County
Latta is a bouncy, blue collar big man who’s a little undersized but plays bigger than he is and can cause mismatches as well. He can fly, and he uses that athleticism to hit the glass on both ends and create extra opportunities. He has pretty good feet for a big and can switch on guards, and he’s a guy who can play in transition and on the perimeter as well.
Journey Al-Amin | 6’4″| Booker T. Washington
One of the fastest stock risers in the 757 as a senior, Al-Amin is a guy who continues to get better with time and has been putting up huge numbers this year. He has great length, can play inside-out, rebounds at a high clip and has a great midrange game. He’s a versatile player who can play and guard multiple positions.
Dylan Catron | 6’7” | Chilhowie
Catron is probably the top hidden gem in the Southwest corner of the state. The 6’7” big man is thin but skilled, and he’s almost more comfortable on the perimeter as he is in the paint. He can alter shots, uses his length for deflections, runs the floor well and can shoot the three at a high clip. He needs to put on weight and get stronger but he has some tools to be a good college player.
