Unsigned Senior Spotlight: Tristen Newton
Basketball players in El Paso hardly get any love or recognition due to the location of the city. However, this season El Paso is the home of the state’s current leading scorer.
Tristen Newton has been unstoppable this season, averaging over 40 points per game. He had a great holiday tournament weekend leading his El Paso Burges squad to the Fort Worth ISD Tournament Championship and earning Tournament MVP honors.
Newton is consistently counted on to put up big numbers in the scoring department to keep his team in competitive games. “I try not to do too much and let the game come to me,” Newton says.
The 6-foot-5 guard effortlessly gets buckets while shooting a very high percentage from the charity stripe. He currently has been offered by UT-Rio Grande Valley and Evansville.
IN TRISTEN’S WORDS
UT-Rio Grande Valley: “I went on a visit there. It was a great environment, the weather was great, and the team was cool. It Is a great place.”
Evansville: “I’ve been to Evansville just for my brother. We have talked about the possibility of playing together, but he just wants the best for me”
When talking about what he will need to work on to prepare for the college game, Newton says, “I will need to continue working on my defense and motor to get ready for the next level.”
Final Thoughts
Because of how Burges runs their entire offense through him, look for Newton to finish out the season as the state’s scoring champion. He is one who can single-handedly upset talented teams during the playoffs because of his ability to go for 40-plus at anytime. Also, look for the senior guard to make his college decision late in the spring.
