GRAND HAVEN BUCCANEERS
Casey Constant is the senior guard for Grand Haven High School. His high motor allows him to accelerate up and down the floor and create plays both offensively and defensively. He has outstanding ball handling skills and court awareness. This player has a high I.Q. and simpy needs to be taken seriously at the collegiate level. Casey moved to Grand Haven from Florida after his father was diagnosed with cancer. He uses his father’s passing as motivation to work hard and to continue to improve not only as a player but as a person.
He has been starting on the varsity since his sophomore year and pound for pound can hang with the best point guards in the state. He can score from either outside with an effective 3 point shot or drive the paint with a smooth floater. Look for Casey to lead a tough Grand Haven squad this year as the Bucaneers will be a difficult team to get by come playoff time. They are well coached and have a deep bench.
What did you do to prepare for this season?
Before each season, I like to put as much time in the gym as I can. During the summer and fall, right before the season, I tend to bug my coach a lot and try to get in the high school almost every day. Work ethic is something I take a lot of pride in.
What are your team goals this season?
For this season, some team goals are to have another winning season and to work harder at becoming tougher. We have a lot of talent this year and once we start working towards attaining that gritty mentality, I believe we will be a top team in the area.
What are your individual goals for this season?
Some individual goals I have this season are to take more of a leadership role and hold our guys accountable every day. It feels good when guys feed off of others energy and I’d like to be the one who brings that. Also, it’d be nice to be all-conference and beat Muskegon when it counts.
What do you think is your best asset on the floor?
I think my best asset on the floor is my ability to get around most people that guard me and make something happen when I get into the paint, whether it be to take a shot for myself or kick it out to a teammate for an open shot. I also think my quickness helps me get some steals on the defensive end and turn them into something on offense.
Who is your favorite basketball player and why? (Pro or college)
Although he doesn’t play anymore, my favorite player is Kobe Bryant. I’ve gone on youtube many times, watched his workouts and have tried my hardest to get the type of mentality he has. I really admire his work ethic and thought process to become the best possible player he can.
How do you get motivated before each game?
To get motivated before each game, I like to visualize myself playing before walking out. It might sound weird, but I think about all the time I’ve put into becoming the player I am that I don’t think many of my opponents have so it gives me an edge. I’ll usually put in headphones and play a couple songs to get me pumped up as well.
Who is the best team you have played against?
The best team I’ve played against recently has been Muskegon. They are a very fast team and always have a lot of good athletes and players. Their quickness and toughness can make things very hard at times. The best team I have ever played was a team called Tampa Catholic during my freshman year in Florida. They had unbelievable talent and the best player I’ve ever played against.
What is the one game in the regular season that you look forward to playing?
One game that I always look forward to every season is the Spring Lake game. Playing in front of that type of crowd and against a large, loud student section like that is something that isn’t matched.
Who is the best player you have played against?
The best player I’ve ever played against was a kid named Kevin Knox from Tampa Catholic. At the time, he was a five-star recruit who was committed to Kentucky. Today, he plays for the Knicks and it’s pretty awesome to turn on the TV and tell people I’ve gone against him. We played them twice during my freshman season and I’m pretty sure he put up over 35 both times. If we’re talking since I’ve moved to Grand Haven, the best player was probably Jake Vantubergan from West Ottawa who is now at GVSU.
What are you plans for the next season?
So far, I am unsure of what I will be doing next year. I hope to find a college to play at that suits me, but I haven’t got many looks so far. Hopefully that changes during the course of this season.
What’s your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject in school is probably Google Bootcamp. It’s one of the easier classes I have this semester and I’m not great at that technology stuff but my teacher makes it a lot of fun.
