The players chosen were picked based on their overall tournament scoring average, if they played more than one game. So, if a player played in four games, then their points were totaled and divided by four. If they played in two games, their scores were totaled and divided by two.
5. Brandon Nicholas (Mae Jemison)
Nicholas had a really good showing in this year’s Huntsville City Classic. Not only did he succeed as a player, but his team took home the John Pruett Championship Trophy. Nicholas’ first game was actually his worst, scoring only 6 points and shooting 22%. He stepped it up big time in his second game, scoring 38 points, shooting 7-13 from behind the three-point line. In the semifinal game against Sparkman, Nicholas scored 25 points, shooting 44% during the game. In the Championship game against Columbia, he only scored 12 points, but it was enough to give Mae Jemison the win. Nicholas had a tournament average of 20.25 points per game and was named to the All-Tournament Team as well as the Most Valuable Player of the Huntsville City Classic.
4. Zondrick Garrett II (Oxford)
Oxford did not have the showing that they had hoped for in the Huntsville City Classic, falling to Lee-Huntsville 57-53 in the second round. However, Garrett had a really solid performance in both games. In his first outing against Grissom, he put up 23 points, shooting an impressive 90%, with his only miss being a three-point attempt. In Oxford’s second-round matchup against Lee-Huntsville, Garrett had 24 points, shooting 62% from the field. It’s a shame that Oxford did not make it further in the tournament, to see what kind of numbers Zondrick Garrett II could have put up. However, his efforts did get him named to the All-Tournament Team and gave him a tournament average of 23.5 points per game.
3. Kobe Brown (Lee-Huntsville)
Lee-Huntsville took home 4th place in the tournament, falling to Sparkman 57-49 in the 3rd/4th place game. Brown started out with an impressive 28 points in Lee’s opening game against Ramsay, hitting 10 of 13 shots, shooting a nice 77%. In Lee’s second game, Brown put up 25 points to lead Lee onto the semifinal game. In the semifinals, Lee played Columbia, where they came up 7 points short. Brown had a double-double, with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Due to an injury, Brown did not play in the 3rd/4th place game, giving him a tournament average of 24 points per game. Brown was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
2. Malik Tyson (Sparkman)
Tyson showed out in his first outing against Madison Academy, dropping 30 points on the Mustangs, shooting 5-6 from the three-point line. He was equally impressive in Sparkman’s second-round matchup against Muscle Shoals. He had a double-double with 30 points and 13 rebounds. Sparkman fell to Mae Jemison (eventual Huntsville City Classic Champions) in the semifinal game 86-73. Tyson only put up 14 points in this game, struggling from the three-point line, shooting 0-4. He bounced back in the 3rd/4th place game against Lee-Huntsville, scoring 22 points, shooting 57% from the three-point line, which was enough to give Sparkman the 57-49 win over Lee-Huntsville to take home 3rd place in the Huntsville City Classic. Tyson averaged 24 points per game during the tournament and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
1. Mark Sears (Muscle Shoals)
The top scorer of the Huntsville City Classic was Mark Sears, who averaged 26 points a game. Despite only playing two games, Sears had elite performances and put up big numbers both games. In Muscle Shoals’ first game against Riverdale, Sears put up 21 points to help Muscle Shoals edge Riverdale 50-48. The second round game did not go Muscle Shoals way and they fell short by 7 points to Sparkman. Despite the loss, Sears had a good performance, putting up 31 points and shooting 48% during the game. With these two stellar performances, Sears was named to the All-Tournament Team and is being awarded the Top Scorer of the Huntsville City Classic by Prep Hoops Alabama.
