That’s likely due to the current culture of basketball and lack of attention to defense. Nevertheless, in the Bishop McGuinness Classic, there was a lot of scoring, yet there were five that stood out in front of the rest.
Norman North, Senior: Shemar Smith
The University of Central Oklahoma signee showed exactly why he’ll be suiting up in the gold and blue next season. The 6-foot-6 forward will likely play on the perimeter more in college and it’s clear that he’s trying to strengthen that facet of his game. In this tournament, however, his team needed him in the post and he delivered.
On the first night, Smith scored 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds.
Norman, Junior: Ben Emmert
Emmert earned this superlative after the first night of play where he scored 26 points. The next two nights he didn’t score more than 20 but he still played a huge role in the Tigers’ success. They wouldn’t have won the tournament’s consolation without them.
Midwest City, Senior: J.D. Ray
As mentioned earlier in our story about Top Creators from this tournament, J.D. is the heart and soul of the Bombers. He rarely makes mistakes and his team’s success ultimately depends on him. Well, on the first night of the tournament, Ray scored 28 points on only four missed shots.
Deer Creek, Junior: Jalyn Todd
To keep up with Norman North’s Smith, Todd had to have a big performance. His 24 points weren’t enough to beat the Wolves, but the Antlers would’ve gotten blown out if it weren’t for Todd’s timely buckets.
Bishop McGuinness, Senior: Patrick Sullivan
Although the Irish went winless in the tournament, there some bright spots. Their senior forward was one of them. On Friday night against Norman, Sullivan scored an efficient 19 points, while displaying some outside range with two threes.
