Not only were these guys facilitators, they constantly found a way to create their own shot off the dribble, which is something that isn’t too popular in high school basketball.
Deer Creek, Senior: Zack Tretheway
Tretheway didn’t have the best game on the second night of the tournament but showed his worth Thursday evening where his ball-handling and passing ability headlined Deer Creek’s team. Although it was in a losing effort, Tretheway finished with 8 assists.
Midwest City, Senior: J.D. Ray
Ray is the heart and soul of a talented, athletic Bomber team. No matter the climate of the game, he’s constantly under control and smart when it comes to his decision making. Rarely will you see him turn the ball over or make questionable decisions on the court. The thing that separates him from the other talented guards on this list is his defense, which is actually his strongest attribute.
Edmond Santa Fe, Senior: Taylor Williams
Williams may be the most reliable player in this tournament. Although he has the talent of a starter, he embraces his role as the Wolves sixth man and makes the best of it. He reminds me of Jamal Crawford, one of the best sixth men to play in the NBA. Taylor is a floor general. Much like Midwest City’s Ray, he rarely makes mistakes and knows how to create plays with his handle as well as his passing.
Edmond Santa Fe, Junior: Donovan Vickers
When you have two guys that you can trust to run your offense on one team, you’re probably doing pretty well. Santa Fe’s tandem of Williams and Vickers is the reason the Wolves are the No. 1 team in 6A. Vickers and Williams combined for 22 assists in two games.
Edmond Memorial, Junior: Jake Royal
Royal is a bit of a hustle, glue guy for the Bulldogs but his ability to create baskets slightly outweighs everything else. He’s another player that simply makes the right decisions with the ball in his hand and the fact that he’s a junior should be alarming for fellow 6A schools.
