The Week Ahead: January 7-12
The season is over the midway point for most teams and we are heading towards the annual Class A state tournament and the inaugural Class 2A state tournament. Here’s a primer to get you ready for the week ahead.
Monday, January 7
- Warren Central and Allen County-Scottsville have two of the best records in the 4th region this season and they will go head to head in Allen County on Monday.
Tuesday, January 8
- Middlesboro and Bell County renew their rivalry. Junior Jabari Byrd is having a big season for Middlesboro and will have to play well to beat Coach Frankie Smith’s Bell County team.
- Another rivalry as Boyle County and Danville square off. Freshman Aden Slone recently transferred from Boyle to Danville and hopes to get eligible soon.
- Collins hosts South Oldham in what should be a fun game. Juniors Luke Morrison, Marcellus Vail and Dayvion McKnight are all in the top 10 of our 2020 rankings.
- Scott County heads to Madison Central in an 11th region showdown. The Cards keep finding ways to win without Michael Moreno and they will have to figure out how to score against a stingy Central defense.
Wednesday, January 9
- Central Hardin heads to John Hardin in a big rivalry game in the 5th region. Alex Matthews is having a huge Junior season while Jacob Hobbs continues his campaign to be the Mr. Basketball nominee from the 5th.
Thursday, January 10
- Webster County has a date with Derrin Boyd and Caldwell County in the Class 2A State Championship regionals. Boyd is quietly having a huge season while Webster is always tough under coach John Newton.
- South Laurel and Clay County only have one loss between them and their game on Thursday should be a dandy. The winner should claim the driver’s seat in the 13th region.
- Henry Clay and Marques Warrick go across town to take on Dunbar in a game that will be a contrast in styles. Henry Clay is guard heavy and likes to run while Dunbar is big and prefers a slower pace.
Friday, January 11
- Cooper and Covington Catholic are perennial favorites in the 9th and they’ll face off on Friday night. The way these teams struggle to score this season, it could be played in the 30s and 40s.
- Muhlenberg County Sophomore Nash Divine will go head to head with Owensboro Senior Darrion Wimsatt in a tough guard battle in Owensboro.
- St. Xavier has been a contender in the 7th all season. They host Male Friday night. The Bulldogs are hoping to get Howard Fleming back from injury soon.
- Also in the 7th region, Waggener has quietly been really good all season long. Trinity is the presumed favorite but is missing David Johnson as he recovers from a knee injury. Senior JJ Kalakon will hope to lead the Wildcats to a win at Trinity.
- The two best teams in the 4th region go head to head again as Bowling Green makes the short trip to Warren Central. Sophomore Isaiah Mason has been coming on lately for BG while Warren Central is led by Kobe Brents and Dre Boyd.
Saturday, January 12
- The All A gets underway in the 1st, 3rd, 8th,10th,13th,14th and 16th regions as we get closer to the annual All A state tournament in Richmond.
- The BSN Sports Kay Morris Classic takes place at Russell County.
- The Bluegrass Cellular New Years Eve Classic is at Central Hardin and features a couple of nice matchups.
- The Iron Warrior Classic at Southwestern takes place in the afternoon.
- The Toyota of Hopkinsville Classic features Mayfield vs University Heights in a battle of 1st and 2nd region contenders.
