From the onset it looked this this was going to be a battle betweeen the two Western Michigan League foes. But such was not the case.
Early ball movement and aggresive play kept the Wildcats in the game early. The Wildcats controlled the boards in the first quarter and capitalized on some poor shooting by the Bulldogs. It all went downhill for the Wildcats with the score tied 15-15 with 3:45 minutes left in the 2nd. The Bulldogs went on a 30-0 run and the game was over. The Bulldogs led 15-11 after one quarter, 27-15 at halftime and 50-23 through three quarters.
The Bulldogs are now 11-3 on the season and 7-2 in league play. The Wildcats fall to 7-6 and 4-5.
TEN BEST:
MVP: Josh Cox (Ravenna)
The junior guard paced Ravenna with 25 points, seven rebounds and three steals. His basketball skill level is tremendous. He’s a tough kid who can handle the ball. His energy level set the tone for Ravenna to keep their foot on the gas pedal when they the Bulldogs on the ropes He scored 10 straight points to end the half for the Bulldogs.
Play of the game: Josh Cox (Ravenna)
He hit a buzzer beater at the end of the half which fired up the student section and the Wildcats. Going into the lockeroom with momentum ignited the Wildcats as they stormed off the court.
Best offensive performance: Josh Cox (Ravenna)
He was able to hit key shots when the Wildcats were struggling from outside. He attacked the rim with confidence and also grabs some huge offensive rebounds and drew fouls going back up.
Best defensive performance: Jacob May (Ravenna)
He controlled the paint grabbing 11 rebounds and contatining Montagues post scoring threat Hunter Mosher.
Best guy off the bench: (Ravenna Bench)
Their bench is deep and there was no let down when players like Jacob Emery, Conner Kilbourne, Anthony Korson and Trevor Sterken took the court. This depth allows them to full court press the whole game.
Best intangibles: Joshua VanderWoude (Ravenna)
This senior leader and floor general simply picked apart the Wildcats offense with driving and getting to the line and driving and kicking it out and even knocking down a couple 3 pointers. This is the type of point guard teams need to go far during playoff time. VanderWoude does it all on the court on both ends.
Best under-the-radar performance: Calvin Schullo (Ravenna)
The junior guard pitched in 8 points and played hustle defense. He was a stabilizing force when VanderWoude was on the bench. Look for him to blossom into a real team leader next season.
Best underclassmen: Drew Collins (Montague)
This sophomore started and played hard scoring 3 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. The ball just was not falling for this young man but his confidence never waned. He crashed the boards well and worked his tail off all game.
Best rebounder: Nick Stever (Montague)
The 6’1 senior fought hard on the glass and finished with 11 rebounds. Even with the game out of reach he still battled to the bitter end. When he didn’t the board he managed to keep balls alive.
Best passer: Joshua VanderWoude (Ravenna)
The senior guard has a high basketball I.Q. and the ability to see the whole court even while penetrating the lane. He can make the quick dish or the long cross court pass.
