This was the makeup game that was cancelled last month between these two squads because Luke Anhalt collapsed on the court while shooting free throws at basketball practice. Their varsity coach, Jeff Zehr, began CPR and AED procedures that saved the Spring Lake teen’s life. Luke was on the bench for this game and the team responded well with his presence and took down West Michigan Aviation Academy 36-33 on Monday.
The clash of these two Class D schools from the Alliance League was fun to watch as these players may not be the biggest and the strongest but they play their hearts out and leave it all on the floor. This game came down to a last possession by WMAA who just missed sending the game into overtime with a 3 pointer that was ruled to come after the buzzer.
With the win, Fruitport Calvary Christian improves to 4-3 and WMAA falls to 5-4.
MVP: Zach Zehr ( Fruitport CC)
The senior guard finished with 18 points and was 6 for 6 from the free throw line. He knocked down a big 3 pointer at buzzer to end the 3rd quarter. This was a huge momentum swing for Fruitport CC as they were struggling to get points in the 3rd quarter.
Play of the game: Jacob McFarren (Fruitport CC)
The husky senior with quick feet made a nice spininng midranger to put Fruitport CC up by 3 points with just over a minute to play.
Best offensive performance: Micah Broersma (WMAA)
The junior shooting forward lead all scorers with 19 points. He hit three 3 pointers and his final shoot went in just after the buzzer which would have sent the game to overtime.
Best defensive performance: Ben Zelenka (Fruitport CC)
Zelenka played a tough game defensively hounding the WMAA guards all evening. He had 2 blocks and 4 rebounds.
Best guy off the bench: Jose Wetzig (Fruitport CC)
Th 5’8 reserve sophomore came in and gave the Eagles some solid minutes. He played within himself and got a couple nice rebounds and kept the ball alive on a few possesions.
Best intangibles: Brady Buzain (WMAA)
Buzain did a lot of things well. He crashed the boards for rebounds, scored in the paint and scored outside.
Best under-the-radar performance: Micah Broersma (WMAA)
Broersma has a nice fluid game. Given more freedom to attack and get to the line he will put up a lot of points. If he can learn how to get to his spot and pull up, his game will improve and allow his teammates to get to open spaces as all the attention will be on him.
Best underclassmen: Ethan Cammenga (Fruitport CC)
The 5’11 freshmen played his roll. He moved well without the ball and played solid defense. Look for him to get more confidence offensively as he matures.
Best aspect of the environment: The Fruitport Calvary Christian gym is terrific. From the acoustics to the coffee bar this is a great place to watch a game.
Best Moment: Seeing the Fruitport CC team mob Luck Anhalt after the game. I am sure this had to be tough on the team losing their senior leader. But don’t count Luke out just yet as he may return to the court again this season.
