This rivalry game was played in the midst of a blizzard outside. The Rangers offense heated everyone up with the 91 point performance as Forest Hills Central went on to beat East Grand Rapids 91-74. The Rangers improved to 9-4 and the loss drops the Pioneers to 6-8.
Ball movement and rebounding by the Rangers propelled them to victory on the their home court. Junior guard Jimmy Scholler led the Rangers with 28 points, fellow junior Mitch Wilkinson added 14 for the Rangers. Senior point guard Jalen Broussard lead the Pioneers with 26 points.
TEN BEST:
MVP: Jimmy Scholler (Forest Hills Central)
Scholler took over the game from start to finish. He scored 28 points and 11 assists. His strength is being able to see the whole court and direct traffic. The 6’3 junior prospect is develoing into a well rounded point guard. He is a strong shooter and defensive player who brings leadership and great decision making to the Forest Hills Central squad. He did it all during this game. He took charges, rebounded well and had couple of steals.
Play of the game: Jimmy Scholler (Forest Hills Central)
Just before half, Scholler drove the lane for a nice finish and was fouled. He hit the free throw to put the Rangers up by 14. This half ending play ignited a huge eruption from the Rangers student section and sent them into the lockeroom with a lot of confidence and momentum.
Best offensive performance: Jalen Broussard ( East Grand Rapids)
The 6’4 senior finished the game with 26 points and 5 assists. His explosiveness and ability to score in the paint is what kept the Pioneers in the game. He was able to slash and score and pull up from midrange.
Best defensive performance: Mitch Wilkinson (Forest Hills Central)
The 6-4 wingman provided the Rangers some defensive prowess. He cut off passing lanes and baseline drives with regularity. He meancing length thwarted the Pioneers attack on offense.
Best guy off the bench: Tate Hallock (Forest Hills Central)
The 6-5, senior has the ability to score (11 points) on one end and provide a lock-down presence and rebound on the other.
Best under-the-radar performance: Jacob Ball (Forest Hills Central)
He did a great job around the basket, especially on the offensive boards. He had a couple nice offensive put backs and also made a few nice assists. He finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Best catch and shoot guy: Mitch Wilkinson (Forest Hills Central)
Mitch has great size on the wing and can really do a lot on the offensive end. He is a player that expands the floor with his presence and that alone opens up the paint for cuts and slashes for his teammates. Willkinson provided the Rangers with scoring and defensive prowess. He was strong at the rim and shot well from outside. He finished with 14 points and had a couple nice assists. He is a perfect compliment to Scholler on the wing. He is a rising star with a lot of upside.
Best Shot Blocker: Daniel Deindorfer ( Forest Hills Central)
The 6’6 senor finished with 5 blocks and disrutped several shoots in the paint. Deindorfer provides a nice presence in the paint for scoring and rebounding.
Best playmaker: Jalen Broussard ( East Grand Rapids)
Even while playing from behind his tool box is deep. He had a couple nice steals which lead to easy layups. He can penetrate and kick it out and pull up for a floater. He is a player that other teams have to match up all game long.
Best coaching decision/strategy: Kyle Carhart ( Forest Hills Central0
He was changing up defensive schemes all game long. He would move from a zone to man depending on the comfort level of the Pioneers. He would also have the Rangers half court press and pinch at times which disrupted the Pioneers flow of getting into offensive sets.
