In the last 2 minutes of the game Placer took off and won with a score of 59-54. The game had a back and forth feel and only had a difference of 9 points. Here are some of my takeaways from the intense match up in the county.
Lincoln
Lincoln’s boys team came into this game 16-6 with their best play ahad of them. Feeding off the energy of freshman Jake Overbay and Jr guard Angelo Nicandro the team has been on a 4 game win streak.
Angelo Nicandro 5’10 Jr. Guard.
Angelo is the point guard for Lincoln high boys team and Angelo is definitely the engine of the team. Slowing them down and speeding them up Angelo gets the boys in their sets and runs the offense. Angelo is a quick twitch guard , with a great hesitation dribble. Coming off ball screens he looks to get downhill and get to the cup. In isolation sistation he gets his defenders dancing with a variety moves and gets in the paint to draw defender and kick out to open shooters. On defense he picks up full court and harrasases the oposing point guard. Creating steals and putting the other teams guards in a rush. During the game Angelo used his speed to get to the basket and put pressure on the defense. He knocked down some open shots and also got a couple of steals to his team in a good position to win.
Jake Overbay
The talented freshman who started on JV, has worked his way into the starting line up. With good size and tremendous range Jake makes it difficult to sag off into help on him with his first two shots in the game did not touch the rim nor did they go in. The next shot was a set 3 pointer from the volleyball line that hit the bottom of the net and after that it was all locked in mode for Jake. Going 3-6 on 3 pointers and ending the game with 3 chargers draw Jake impacted the game in a ton of ways. He also drew a 5th foul on a impact senior for Placer. The freshman has been averaging right around 15 points for Lincoln since being moved up to varsity.
Placer
Placer came into this game 13-9 looking to grab first place in the league with a win over Lincoln Which they gained after last night. Lead by long lanky senior 6’6 Konnor Baroni.
Konnor Baroni
The 6’6 senior showed a lot of poise and determination in the win over Lincoln. Grabbing 10+ rebounds and scoring 15+ points in the win Konnor showed his ability to put it on the floor, knock down open threes and finish through contact. He also had about 3 blocks in the game. Definitely the difference maker in their win. Keeping his poise will help his team keep winning as their season comes to a close and a hopeful playoff birth
