They would go on to take a 41-31 lead into intermission on 15 points from the bench and 22 points in the paint and would hold off a late comeback effort from Lennox to win 70-64.
St. Paul Central switched up their defense in the third quarter to limit Lennox to eight points after an 18-point second quarter. Then in the fourth quarter, Lennox would switch from man to a 1-3-1 zone to outscore the Minuteman 25-13 in the final period to bring the deficit to single digits. But the Orioles weren’t able to slow down Luke McElroy (22 points) and Daveonte Davis (18 points).
The Minuteman shot lights out in the first half going 62 percent from the field and 50 percent from deep. They would continue that into the second half helping them to hold off Lennox in the late minutes. They would end up shooting 49 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from the deep on 6-of-16 shooting.
The Orioles shrugged off a sluggish shooting performance in the third quarter to mount a comeback in the fourth outscoring St. Paul Central 25-13. The Orioles had a couple opportunities late to cut the lead even shorter but couldn’t connect on shots.
TURNING POINT: The Minuteman used a 62 percent shooting from the field in the first half to accrue a 10-point lead at the half. Their 1-2-2 zone also led to the Orioles only scoring 8 points in the third quarter.
KEY PLAY(S): Although the Orioles lost they had a huge fourth quarter outscoring the Minuteman 25-13 to bring the lead to single digits. For the Minuteman, they got 19 points off the bench compared to Lennox’s nine.
TEAM LEADERS:
Lennox: Will Daughtery had 16 points including 4-of-6 from deep to lead the Orioles. Josh Arlt finished with 12 points and seven assists.
St. Paul Central: McElroy led all scorers with 22 points and had four boards. Davis had 18 points and 5 rebounds. Ronnell Porter finished with 11 points, four boards, seven assists and three steals.
