Kieren Nichols, 5’10 G, Knoxville — 20.0 ppg, 5.0 apg, 1.6 spg
Very few players in the state have a made a bigger impact for their team than Nichols. The vastly improved guard leads 4-3 Knoxville in scoring, assists and steals.
Connor Drew, 6’6 PF, Ballard — 15.9 ppg, 9.5 rpg
Drew had one of the best freshman seasons of any player in Iowa last season, and he’s following that up with a nice sophomore campaign. His 15.9 points are third-highest among sophomores in 3A. The 9.5 rebounds are the highest in that same group.
Luke Rankin, 5’8 G, Dallas Center-Grimes — 15.1 ppg, 3.4 apg, 1.5 spg
After showing glimpses of what he was capable this past summer at the Grand View Team Camp, Rankin has exploded onto the scene this season as one of the state’s most productive sophomores.
Kyle Kelley, 6’4 G, West Delaware — 14.6 ppg
West Delaware is 7-1 to start the season and currently ranked No. 8 in our 3A rankings, the emergence of Kelley as a bona fide star has been a big reason why. After averaging 5.1 points per game last season, he’s nearly tripled that output this season so far.
Spencer Mackey, 6′ G, LeMars — 15.1 ppg
As a freshman, Mackey scored 1.5 points per game, now, he’s one of the best scorers in Iowa’s Class of 2021. The 15.1 points per game are fourth-best among sophomores in 3A.
Ryan Blum, 6’3 G/F, Glenwood — 14.3 ppg, 2.6 spg
Last March, then-freshman Ryan Blum was instrumental in helping Glenwood win its first-ever state title. Some key seniors graduated from that team and Blum’s production has increased considerably as a result.
Tanner Henningsen, 6’3 G, Gilbert — 12.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg
The All Iowa Attack product is putting up some mesmerizing shooting numbers so far this season. He’s 64.4 percent from the floor and even more impressive is 66.7 percent from deep, that’s remarkable. Of his 27 3-point tries, he’s made 18 of them.
Nate Mueller, ADM — 5’8 PG, ADM — 12.4 ppg, 5.5 apg, 1.8 rpg
The dynamic young point guard has taken the reins at ADM and has racked up more assists than any other sophomore in 3A in the process. He’s also shooting a very decent 40 percent from 3-point range, and a sterling 90 percent from the free-throw line.
Jake Layman, Sergeant Bluff-Luton — 11.3 ppg, 2.6 apg
Another guy who is putting up sensational shooting numbers, Layman is scoring his 11.3 points per game on an extremely efficient 58.7 percent shooting and is shooting the 3-ball even better at 61.1 percent.
