The Montezuma guard lands on a very short list of guys who could lay claim to having the best sophomore season in the state so far. What makes his numbers more impressive, is he’s doing it on the state’s 3rd-ranked Class 1A team, 10-0 Montezuma.
Angelo Winkel, 6’9 PF, Bishop Garrigan — 15.9 ppg, 3.4 bpg, 10.4 rpg
Last season, Winkel established himself as a top player in his class, this season, he’s solidifying himself as one of the best bigs in the state, regardless of class. His 3.4 blocks and 10.4 rebounds are best among sophomores in Class 1A.
Parker Rochford, 5’10 G, Edgewood-Colesburg — 23.8 ppg, 3.7 apg, 4.2 spg, 4.3 rpg
No sophomore in the state is scoring it better than Rochford so far this season. And no sophomore in Iowa has more steals than Rochford does this season. The Vikings guard has been as good as any sophomore in the state.
Kaleb Cornilsen, 6’3 C, Easton Valley — 22.6 ppg, 2.1 spg, 10.4 rpg
After playing in just one game with the varsity last season as a freshman, Cornilsen has burst onto the scene this season. His points/rebounds numbers are better than any other sophomore big-man in Iowa.
Layne Pryor, 6’3 C, Woodbine — 20.5 ppg, 1.6 spg, 7.4 rpg
This comes as little surprise, Pryor had one of the better statistical seasons of any freshman in Iowa a year ago. Woodbine is off to a 7-3 start this season, and it’s Pryor who been at the helm while leading the team in scoring and rebounds.
Garrett Trapp, 6’1 G, River Valley — 19.8 ppg, 3.3 apg, 2.7 spg
Recently, we put together a 50-40-90 article, highlighting some guys in the state who have a shot at accomplishing the rare shooting feat, Trapp was included the article. He’s been remarkably efficient when scoring this season, and has been getting it done on the defensive end, too.
Bubba Sohn, 5’9 G, Harris-Lake Park — 16.3 ppg, 3.9 apg, 3.3 spg
Here’s a guy who put himself on the map last season with a fabulous freshman season, and has stepped his game up a bit this season while leading the Wolves in assists and steals. His 16.3 points per game are second-best on the squad.
Andrew Holtz, 5’11 PG, Maquoketa Valley — 11.0 ppg, 5.8 apg, 3.9 rpg
His 5.8 assists per game are tops among sophomores in Class 1A. But he’s still managing to score it at a pretty good rate, too. Maquoketa Valley is 6-3 this season, and Holtz has been arguably the team’s best player.
Trey Baker, 6’3 G/F, Martensdale-St. Mary’s — 16.5 ppg, 1.9 spg, 5.9 rpg
The Saints are off to a red-hot 8-0 start to the season, and are on the verge of cracking our Class 1A top 10. It’s this sophomore sharpshooter that’s leading the charge. MS-M has a group of impact sophomores, they’ll be hard to handle for the next two years plus.
Kaden Schnede, 6’2 PF, Calamus-Wheatland — 13.0 ppg, 1.6 spg, 7.9 rpg
The state’s eighth-ranked 1A squad has been so good in large part because Schnede has emerged as a star player. Last season he averaged 2.9 points and 2.7 rebounds with the varsity, this season he’s the second-best scorer and the leading rebounder for a 9-1 Warriors squad.
