Continue ReadingThere seems to be a youth movement in the St. Louis area, and it was evident at the MLK Classic hosted by SLUH. Many underclassmen stole the show and there were 7 freshmen playing big time roles for their teams. Here is our rundown of the “Fab-Frosh” who were on display at this great event.
6’5 Dampier Evans – DuBourg
Dampier looks like anything but a youngster. At 6’5 with an athletic build, he is one of a trio of very intriguing freshmen for the Cavaliers and an invaluable piece to this year’s squad. He is averaging nearly 8 points and 8 rebounds per contest and is getting better every time he steps on the floor. He is very capable inside the arc where he already uses his length well to get to the cup and has gained confidence in his jumper out to mid-range. His progression throughout the remainder of the season and into the summer will definitely have our attention.
6’6 LeMond Shaw – DuBourg
LeMond possesses impressive size and strength for a freshman. He got off to a slow start to the season but since hitting double figures against Holt on 12/15 he has been averaging close to 10 point per game for the Cavs. He can slash and score at the rim and is starting to show some consistency with his shot behind the arc. I have seen him on two separate occasions now with highlight caliber blocks at the rim. He and Dampier could develop into quite the tandem for DuBourg in the coming years.
6’2 Eddie Weekly – DuBourg
Eddie has heated up as well as the season has progressed and he has gotten more comfortable. He has the potential to develop into a knock-down three point shooter and at 6’2 still has plenty of room to grow. He already is a high IQ player with good vision that has multiple games with 4+ assists so far this year.
5’9 Larry Abbey – University City
Larry starts and runs the show at the point guard position for a very young U-City team that is 10-9 so far this year. He does a very good job of handling the ball with poise and getting the offense going for the Lions, and it was that ability that led to a come from behind win over Cahokia at the MLK Classic. He is a slick ballhandler that will continue to develop as a legitimate scoring threat.
5’8 Jaden McClain – SLUH
Jaden has only been in the lineup since 12/27 and has already made a huge difference for the Jr. Bills. While small in stature, he is big in toughness and is lightening quick off the dribble. He is not afraid to go right at older, stronger defenders and is pesky and active on the defensive end himself. He is averaging 8.6 points per game and bringing some stability to the backcourt for a young, rebuilding SLUH team.
6’1 Luke Johnston – SLUH
Cool Hand Luke is one to keep an eye on at SLUH. He and his back-court mates Jaden McClain and Freddie Cooper have the Jr. Bills looking dangerous in a year or two. Luke is a very good three point shooter that has had some big performances this season including a 24 point, 5 three pointer outing against Blue Springs. He is the leading scorer for SLUH this season at 10 points per game.
6’9 Tiki Musaka – St. Louis Christian Academy
When someone tells me there is a 6’9 freshman that’s going to be at an event, they have my attention. Tiki is every inch of that with a wingspan that is likely approaching 7 feet already. He moves like a gazelle and although raw, the ceiling is extremely high for him. Right now, he is an effective rim runner, dump-off finisher, rebounder and rim protector for an uber-talented SLCA team and is likely a lock to be in our rankings as a sophomore next year.
