The athletic 5-foot-10, 175-pound point guard did his part running the team and also scoring the ball for the Lakers, and with his first college scholarship offer already in hand, McKinney is excited about what the rest of the season holds for him and his teammates.
“I feel like the season has been going great,” McKinney said. “We’re playing as a team and playing together, and things have been going really good. The chemistry has been good.”
In the four games at Liberty High School, McKinney averaged 12.5 points (second on the team), 4.8 rebounds, and a team-high 3.8 assists, showing the ability to take the ball strong to the basket and finish while also keeping defenses honest by hitting a few threes (5-for-12 overall). As he continues to improve his decision making, McKinney has progressed with his game.
“I feel like it has been coming along pretty well,” McKinney said. “I’ve been working hard in practice and my guys have been pushing me every day to become better.”
McKinney has felt the rewards as this past month the sophomore earned his very first scholarship offer from Eastern Washington. “It was a good feeling,” McKiney said. “I’ve been working hard all my life and for that to happen my dreams are starting to come true. (Eastern Washington) is a really good college and I love them.”
There’s still plenty of time since he has years of high school left so McKinney isn’t ready to make any early decisions yet. Instead he’s honed in on the rest of the year with his Lakers teammates. “I believe we’re a good enough to play here on out against the top teams,” McKinney said. “I think we’re going to do pretty good.”
McKinney currently ranks as the #5 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
