The strong 6-foot-2 combo guard is now in his senior season at Grant High School and along with teammate Aaron Deloney, is one of the Generals’ team leaders on and off the floor. Rankin is off to a good start so far with Grant’s title defense and he’s hoping things start sorting out with his college recruitment.
“I feel like I’m shooting it better and I’m starting to get more bouncy,” Rankin said. “We’re just trying to get that ‘ship again. It’s a new team and we’re adjusting but I think we can do it. The only thing we’ve got to do is rebound and defend, because I believe our offense is there.”
Rankin has been steady for the Generals, complimenting Deloney in the backcourt with his scoring and ball-handling but also helping out up front with rebounding. In the recent Les Schwab Invitational, he averaged 12.3 points and 2.5 assists while grabbing a team-high 8.5 rebounds. He scored 17 points and grabbed a team-high 11 boards in the big PIL Showcase win over Jefferson and hit a couple of clutch shots down the stretch.
The latest with his college recruitment? Rankin continues to be in contact with coaches at varying levels and he had this update. “I’ve been talking to Chaminade, Dartmouth, Weber State, Central Washington, and Casper,” Rankin said. “We’ll just see how this season goes.”
As the year progresses, the path to the next level should start getting clearer. Rankin has goals to achieve and he’s got his sights set high. “I just want to win another chanpionship,” Rankin said. “But some individual goals would be First Team All-PIL since I got second Team back-to-back, and also First Team All-State. That’s the plan.”
Rankin currently ranks as the #9 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
