The athletic 6-foot-3, 185-pound swingman has fit right in with his West Linn teammates so far this season and to say the senior has made an impression would be an understatement. Courtney has won not just one – but two slam dunk championships, but the big-time leaper has shown that his game is more than dunking so far for the Lions.
“I feel like it’s going to be a great season,” Courtney said. “We’ve been playing hard and we’re working hard this whole year. I feel like I’ve been fitting in more and more as we keep going. I’ve been getting more chemistry (with my teammates) as we go.”
The year started off with a trip to Hawaii where West Linn participated in the Iolani Classic. There the Lions took on national powers such as La Lumiere and Westchester and fought hard. For Courtney – who just so happened to win the Slam Dunk contest there – it was an experience he’ll never forget.
“Hawaii was great – it was my first time out there and I really enjoyed the tournament,” Courtney said. “There were a lot of people and it was really good exposure there.”
From there, Courtney came back home and played in the Les Schwab Invitational where he averaged 12.0 points and 9.3 rebounds and won another Slam Dunk title. Coaches continue to be impressed with his athleticism and motor, and the senior already has one college scholarship offer with the hopes of getting more.
“My first offer was Concordia – the first time they watched me play was at the Prime Time Top 40,” Courtney said. “They talked to me after and came to a couple of practices and after that they offered me a scholarship. Now I’ve definitely got a lot more colleges and a lot more exposure than I’ve had before.”
Courtney named Central Washington, NW Nazarene, and Lewis-Clark State as some of the other schools that have been in contact with him. He’s keeping all of his options open at this time with his eyes set on goals for West Linn and himself the rest of the way.
“We’re definitely going for a state title – that’s our main goal as a team, to win the state title,” Courtney said. “I want to get as many colleges looking at me as possible and for me to help my team every game, hustle as much as I can.”
Courtney currently ranks as the #12 player in the PrepHoops Class of 2019 rankings.
