But when it mattered in Thursday night’s league win over McNary, the all-around 6-foot-1, 175-pound guard stepped up his play. The junior made some big plays down the stretch for the Olympians in a win that hopefully turns the tide in what has been a roller coaster season so far.
“We’re a young team and we’re going through a lot of ups and downs this year,” Lomax said. “But this was a big win for us and help us get back on track. I thought it was a pretty bad game for me as I missed a lot of shots and turned the ball over sometimes. But when it mattered at the end of the game, I got some clutch free throws and we got the ‘W’ – that’s all that matters.”
On the night, Lomax actually scored 22 points on 6-for-11 shooting, including 7-for-8 free throw shooting in overtime. Overall scoring 20 points a game is something he’s done most of the season but Lomax continues to push to get even better. “I feel like I could do better but I’ve been doing good,” Lomax said. “I could probably be more aggressive and be a better leader, but I think I’m doing alright.”
While he hasn’t heard directly from any college coaches, Lomax noted that mentor and Hoop Salem AAU coach James Johnson has been in touch with the likes of Pepperdine, Eastern Washington, and Portland State on his behalf. Lomax is keeping all of his options open, knowing that a good year for him and Sprague will help translate into recruiting attention.
“We’ve just got to keep it going and keep on getting better and tougher,” Lomax said. “We want to make it the playoffs, be a top 16 team and get a home game, make it to the second round and try to get to Chiles – that’s the goal.”
Lomax currently ranks as the #8 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
